(CLO) The US House of Representatives has just announced a new budget plan with a proposal to cut $2 trillion in spending, aiming to promote President Donald Trump's agenda on border security, defense, energy and tax cuts.
The budget proposal allows the House Ways and Means Committee to pursue up to $4.5 trillion in tax cuts, while also targeting $2 trillion in mandatory spending cuts and raising the debt ceiling by $4 trillion.
House Speaker Mike Johnson said the proposal was an important step toward fully implementing Trump's "America First" agenda. Johnson noted that nearly all House Republicans were directly involved in the development of the plan.

The House budget proposal, however, has been met with fierce debate within the Republican Party. Some lawmakers want a comprehensive budget bill, while the Senate favors splitting it into two packages: one focusing on border security, defense and energy, while the other addresses tax issues.
Senator Lindsey Graham, chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, said it was important to pass the key parts quickly before finalizing the tax bill. "The campaign is over, now it's time to run the country. We made a promise and we have to keep it," he said.
The differences in approach between the two chambers of Congress have created a stalemate, forcing leaders of both parties to seek a compromise. Senate Majority Leader John Thune said he met with House Speaker Johnson to discuss coordination between the two chambers and will wait to see what the House can achieve before the Senate takes its next step.
Meanwhile, the White House is said to support the Senate's approach, with two Trump administration officials calling on Republican senators to speed up approval of $175 billion in new border funding.
The budget debate comes as the Trump administration seeks to expand its economic and foreign policies, including extending some 2017 tax cuts, boosting domestic manufacturing and increasing investment in U.S. energy.
