High schools in Ho Chi Minh City have begun surveying students on subjects to choose for the 2025 high school graduation exam. Many teachers believe that choosing the right subject will help increase their chances of university admission.
ANSWER 3 QUESTIONS BEFORE CHOOSING A SUBJECT
To prepare for the high school graduation exam taking place in June, the first exam to apply the 2018 General Education program with many changes, before the Lunar New Year holiday, high schools organized a survey to explore the choice of graduation exam subjects of 12th grade students.
This year, 12th graders will take the high school graduation exam with 4 subjects. Of which, math and literature are compulsory; the remaining 2 subjects are optional from the subjects they are studying and are evaluated by scores.

Mr. Tran Nghia Nhan, Principal of Nam Sai Gon High School (District 7), said that this year, candidates will take 4 subjects, in addition to 2 compulsory subjects: math and literature, students will choose 2 elective subjects from among the subjects that are evaluated by scores. In addition, this year, the exam questions of the new program, the structure as well as the scoring method of multiple choice subjects are also completely new, so the school is conducting initial surveys to grasp the situation of needs as well as the orientation of students in choosing subjects. From there, a teaching and review plan will be developed so that it can be implemented right after the end of the Lunar New Year holiday, around the beginning of February.
In order to help students choose 2 suitable subjects to achieve good results and have the most advantage when participating in university entrance exams, teacher Pham Le Thanh, Nguyen Hien High School (District 11), has some suggestions. "Before making a decision, students should and need to answer the following 3 questions: What combination of subjects do the universities require for their favorite majors?; Personal strengths: Which subjects are you most confident in?; Personal goals: Are English or natural/social subjects suitable for their long-term career direction?", Mr. Thanh specifically stated.
According to teacher Pham Le Thanh, students should base on their 3-year study results in grades 10, 11, and 12 to choose subjects that are their strengths and develop a clear career orientation. For example: Engineering - technology - natural sciences: Choose a combination of physics - chemistry - biology. Being good at English will be an advantage when studying international-related majors. Economics - management majors prioritize math, English and a subject in the social sciences group. Social sciences - arts majors can add English if they plan to study languages, tourism, or communications...
Teachers at Nguyen Hien High School emphasize that students should not choose too many difficult subjects at the same time because if they choose a combination of many subjects that require high thinking, they should make sure that students are able to study all the subjects equally. For students who are not good at studying, they should choose their favorite subject and an easier subject to avoid pressure. Many universities and majors require high English scores (or have priority for admission based on international certificates such as IELTS, TOEFL). For students who are good at English, choosing this subject will increase their chances of getting a higher admission score.
X DETERMINE CAREER GOALS
Similarly, Mr. Huynh Thanh Phu, Principal of Bui Thi Xuan High School (District 1), advised that to choose 2 elective subjects for the high school graduation exam appropriately, students need to consider many aspects to ensure that they are suitable for their abilities, interests and personal goals.
First, determine your career goals and future orientation by learning about the major you want to pursue at university, college or other training programs. Each major often requires a specific combination of subjects for admission. Currently, universities are building many subject combinations to meet the wishes of students. Next, students learn about job opportunities in the field they want to choose as a future career through related subjects.
From career orientation, students must correctly assess their own learning ability to choose their strengths and favorite subjects to have the ability to achieve high scores, helping to increase the total graduation exam score and reduce learning pressure.

According to Mr. Phu, the principle of choosing subjects for the exam must still be the subjects that you are passionate about and love. That will help students easily concentrate and not feel pressured during the learning process. However, passion must be associated with the university's admission combination and the right major that you love.
"When choosing a subject, students should pay attention to the practicality of the subject. There should be no distinction between major and minor subjects. Some subjects such as information technology, foreign languages, physics, chemistry, and biology can be applied to many fields of science, technology, and life," Mr. Phu further analyzed.
According to this principal, statistics show that traditional subject combinations are still dominant and provide guidance for studying and researching at university level. Combinations such as A00 (math, physics, chemistry), A01 (math, physics, English), D01 (math, literature, English), C00 (literature, history, geography) are combinations that are often used by many schools for admission.
In addition, Mr. Phu mentioned the "admission market". According to Mr. Phu, for many years, top schools have had very high admission scores and 2025 will be no exception. If students choose subjects in the admission groups for highly competitive majors, they need to achieve excellent scores to have a chance to be admitted. "To meet the aspirations, there must be the right investment. In addition to "learning from teachers", students must study by themselves and spend as much time as possible solving reference questions. When choosing 2 subjects, students should avoid choosing subjects that require too much review time, leading to neglecting other subjects. In other words, students must know how to balance their time appropriately so that their review is highly effective," Mr. Phu advised.
In addition, high school principals also said that after having survey statistics on students' 2 optional subjects, schools need to focus on teachers with experience in specific subjects. Next, they need to review and arrange review classes according to the subject combinations students choose to serve an exam that meets both graduation and university admission goals.
Expand to many other options
Teacher Pham Le Thanh, Nguyen Hien High School (District 11), advised: Students should not rely solely on the results of the high school graduation exam but should expand other admission options to increase their chances, especially through international certificates, transcripts or separate exams. Many students choose to apply through high school graduation exam scores, leading to fierce competition, especially in attractive majors such as economics, information technology, and medicine. Therefore, students should also research and participate in the school's own exams: Ho Chi Minh City National University's capacity assessment, Ho Chi Minh City University of Education's specialized capacity assessment, exams of Hanoi National University, Hanoi University of Science and Technology... to increase their chances of entering university based on these methods.
