As Lunar New Year approaches, the Vietnamese film market faces a great opportunity as the box office lacks international blockbusters and outstanding projects. Three Vietnamese films released during this year's Tet season are expected to create a revenue boost, bringing a vibrant and successful Tet film season.
Only a few days left until Tet Nguyen Dan officially begins. The Vietnamese box office is currently not seeing many fluctuations due to the lack of new, outstanding projects.
Old series are also losing their appeal as the number of screenings and ticket sales are decreasing. This is considered a great opportunity for Vietnamese movies Launched during Tet season, it dominated the market and attracted audiences at a time when competition was not too fierce.
Ticket office has no fluctuations
Topping the revenue charts of Box Office Vietnam (an independent box office monitor) last week was still 404 Run Away Now . This is the fifth consecutive week that the Thai horror comedy has surpassed many competitors to lead the Vietnamese box office.
During the three-day weekend, the film earned over VND2.4 billion from over 27,800 tickets sold in about 2,800 screenings. This achievement decreased by about 50% compared to the previous week (VND3.8 billion), but still helped the film surpass the revenue mark of over VND100 billion, contributing to affirming the position of Thai films in the Vietnamese market.
Coming in second place is an Indonesian horror film. Mother's Ghost with more than 1.4 billion VND. The film was not highly appreciated for its content, acting, and promotion was not outstanding.
But the project still sold tickets, showing that horror movies are still a favorite dish of Vietnamese audiences. Many people are willing to spend money to watch horror movies regardless of whether the content is attractive or not.
Vietnamese movies Sister in law continues to hold third place with more than 1.2 billion VND at the weekend box office, raising total revenue to more than 112 billion VND, which is a good sign for the crew.
Two Vietnamese movies Kaleidoscope: Catch the Ghost and Rain on Butterfly Wings still in theaters but with meager box office revenue. Both had low screenings, under 50, and failed to make it into the top 10 of the Box Office Vietnam .
Presently Kaleidoscope: Get revenge on the ghost grossed only over 6 billion VND, making it one of the most regrettable projects of Vietnamese cinema in the past year.
Rain on Butterfly Wings is not a commercial film so it is difficult to sell tickets. The project belongs to the art-house genre (art) which is not suitable for a select audience, and was not widely promoted so it only earned over 600 million VND.
However, this number is still quite low compared to Inside the golden cocoon (1.4 billion VND) or Glowing Ashes (4.1 billion VND).
The remaining positions in the top 5 of Box Office Vietnam two cartoons respectively: Mufasa: The Lion King (700 million VND) and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (590 million). However, both had low revenue, a sign that the box office was in a gloomy state before Tet.
Opportunities for Vietnamese films during Tet season
This week, the Lunar New Year movie season will officially begin. All eyes are on three Vietnamese movies scheduled to be released on the first day of the Lunar New Year 2025 (January 29th), respectively: The Guardian Quartet (Tran Thanh) director), Love the wrong best friend (Nguyen Quang Dung, Diep The Vinh) and Billionaire Kiss (Thu Trang).
All three are made by professional, experienced crews, and feature famous actors, so they are expected to achieve high revenue upon release, creating a successful season. Tet movie vibrant with many surprises.
The Guardian Quartet is the fourth film that Tran Thanh has directed. His previous films were all dramas, often exploring conflicts within families. This time, the director changed direction by choosing a humorous story, suitable for the Tet atmosphere.
In three movies shown during Tet, The Guardian Quartet Gathering many famous people, including: Le Giang, Le Duong Bao Lam, miss Tieu Vy, Quoc Anh… Director Tran Thanh and his sister Uyen An also play two important characters in the film.
Love the wrong best friend is the only remake film released in theaters this Tet season. Original work Friend Zone Produced by Thailand, it caused a fever when shown in Vietnam in 2019, earning more than 53 billion VND. The Vietnamese version is notable thanks to the participation of a star cast including Kaity Nguyen, Tran Ngoc Vang and Thanh Son.
Meanwhile, Billionaire Kiss is the first film of comedian Thu Trang. In her attempt at a new role, she put her trust in a young cast including: Miss Doan Thien An, Le Xuan Tien and Ma Ran Do.
Besides three Vietnamese films, foreign projects are mainly animated films such as: Paddington: The Traveling Bear , Thousand Pound Mission , Knight Goat and 7 royal treasures …
Therefore, Vietnamese films have many opportunities to attract domestic audiences. When the box office does not fluctuate significantly, domestic films can take advantage to break through.
Many people expect that this year the country's cinema will have an explosive Tet film season, with works that will create big hits, continuing the success of previous Tet film seasons.
Last year, Tomorrow Tran Thanh's film set a box office record, grossing more than 551 billion VND and is currently the highest-grossing Vietnamese film of all time.
