Vietnamese music is vibrant thanks to the explosion of reality TV

Life music more vibrant

Every Saturday night, Vietnamese audiences eagerly watch “Anh trai vuon ngan cong gai” and “Anh trai say hi” air. The fact that the two shows air at the same time and have similar formats unintentionally divides the audience into two factions because it is difficult for them to watch both shows at the same time.

However, “Anh trai vu ngan cong gai” and “Anh trai say hi” quickly formed their own identities, with characteristics to distinguish them from the other programs. The two separate directions created completely different outputs of musical products.

“Anh trai vu ngan cong gai” debuted with 33 individual performances, reviving melodies familiar to many generations of audiences. Many young people said that while they were excited about the series of hits “Cô gái metre 52”, “Giá như”, “ Người là ơi”, their parents were nostalgic with songs that were decades old such as “ Tình đất”, “ Niệm tin chinh thang”, “Trong vong”, “Chiec khan gio am”...

For both the individual and group competitions, the 33 artists prioritized songs that had a certain level of popularity, thereby easily touching the audience's emotions, bringing a space of reminiscence and connection from the past to the present.

Thanks to that, the music production team had the opportunity to shape the theme of the song from the beginning, without being pressured by the success of the original remix or having to overcome the “shadow” of a certain hit.

The songs are mostly mixed with dance, pop, EDM or ballad, using a lot of English, lyrics close to young people, and embedding bold and thorny thoughts. The participation of too many rappers is both an opportunity and a challenge for the crew because they have many strong personalities but also pose the problem of balancing and dividing the performance space between vocals and rap.

The heat does not cool down

After just a few weeks, “Anh trai vu ngan cong gai” has brought more than 40 performances of all genres, while “Anh trai say hi” has released at least 14 brand new songs, not to mention theme songs and special group songs.

On social media, the number of discussions about 63 “brothers” is always at hundreds of thousands/week. In the top 20 trending music on YouTube, there are 9 products from these two programs. All episodes, although 2-3 hours long, are always in the trending section on YouTube, attracting millions of views.

The explosive effect of the two boy band search programs stems from the success of “Beautiful Sister Riding the Wind and Breaking the Waves” in 2023. The program brings together 30 female stars like a breath of fresh air, a strange dish for Vietnamese audiences after many years of stuck in the format of talent search and talent competition programs.

The investment and elaborate staging of the performances, along with the harmonization and sharing of the stage with a series of famous names, have created a series of million-view songs for the show "Beautiful Sister".

Therefore, it is not surprising that "Anh trai vu ngan cong gai" was copyrighted and localized right after "Chi dep dap gio roi song" ended.

The music of “Anh trai say hi” and “Anh trai vu ngan cong gai” has its own strengths, serving its own audience.
