At a cabinet meeting on December 31, the Israeli government approved the appointment of Mr. Israel Katz as the new foreign minister to replace Mr. Eli Cohen.
The rotation is part of an agreement that the ruling coalition presented to the Israeli parliament (Knesset) ahead of the swearing-in of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government in December 2022.
According to the agreement, Mr. Eli Cohen will serve as foreign minister for one year, after which Mr. Israel Katz will take over the position for two years.
Israel's new foreign minister took office amid the Middle Eastern country's economic and foreign affairs difficulties, as it enters the 86th day of the conflict with Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
This decision needs to be approved by the National Assembly.
In addition, the Israeli government also gave the green light to postpone local elections scheduled for February 2024.
