According to Yonhap news agency, on January 26, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, the ruling and main opposition parties all unanimously condemned the attack on lawmaker Bae Hyun-jin of the ruling People's Power Party (PPP).
Earlier, on the afternoon of January 25, Congressman Bae Hyun-jin was hit in the head by a rock thrown by a teenager in Gangnam District, southern Seoul. The victim was later taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Congressman Bae Hyun-jin briefly served as President Yoon Suk Yeol's spokesman.
The attack came less than a month after opposition Democratic Party (DP) Chairman Lee Jae-myung was stabbed in the neck during a visit to Busan. President Yoon Suk Yeol condemned the attack as an act of terrorism and wished Bae Hyun-jin a speedy recovery.
The PPP also condemned the attack and called for a reassessment of the deepening hatred towards politics. PPP lawmaker Yun Jae-ok said the party plans to meet with the head of the National Police Agency next week to discuss measures to ensure the safety of lawmakers and other politicians ahead of the April general election.
