DEADLINE
Coach Kim Sang-sik sent many "supporting" players of the Vietnamese team such as Ngoc Tan, Tien Anh, Tien Dung, Vi Hao, Van Khang onto the field in the opening match against Laos, but still kept some experienced players in key positions such as central defender (Duy Manh, Thanh Chung), central midfielder (Hoang Duc) or striker (Tien Linh). Mr. Kim wanted to kill two birds with one stone: still experimenting with the lineup, but there must be pillars to ensure victory, even a big win to create a competitive gap.
Coach Park Hang-seo and his wife attended the match.

However, the somewhat "awkward" formation, with positions playing together for the first time, made it difficult for the Vietnamese team to enter the match. On the uneven, grass-covered field at the Laos National Stadium, Hoang Duc and his teammates could not play short balls, but focused on long balls, with passes pouring behind the defense for Vi Hao, Tien Linh and Hai Long to rush down and face the goalkeeper. However, this style of play did not make it difficult for the large and well-covered defense of Laos.
In their first time playing together, Hoang Duc, Ngoc Tan and Hai Long could not control the game well, leading to the Vietnamese team almost giving up the middle, having to focus on attacking on both sides. If in the first half, Tien Anh was able to push the ball to exploit the right wing, then in the second half, Van Khang became the main spearhead to help the away team find a goal. Although creating up to 11 scoring opportunities (5 times on target), the Vietnamese team did not have the most basic factor to overwhelm Laos, which is a stable and seamless playing rhythm. Mr. Kim's students passed the ball too long, and most of these balls did not have a landing point for the striker to take advantage of.
Hai Long brought the turning point of the match
Hai Long (left) scored to help the Vietnamese team break the deadlock.
VN's short passing combinations were easily broken, while most of the opportunities were created by the individual efforts of Vi Hao or Hai Long. Then when the opportunity appeared, the VN team also lacked the "coolness" to take advantage, for example, in the 35th minute, Tien Linh rushed down to face the Lao goalkeeper, but hesitated to finish, allowing the opponent to retreat and intercept the ball at his feet.
The burden on their legs in the opening match made the Vietnamese team unable to operate coherently, and this gave Laos more confidence. Coach Ha Hyeok-jun's team carefully studied Vietnam's playing style to neutralize it by pressing fiercely in the middle and covering the overlapping phases. Thanks to that, Laos stood firm in the first half. Even the home goalkeeper only had to show his talent once when he blocked Vi Hao's header in the first minutes.
T EFFECTIVE CHANGE OF TEACHER K IM
In the second half, coach Kim Sang-sik sent Van Vi, Tuan Hai, Quang Hai and Van Toan onto the field. Compared to Van Khang, Van Vi tended to dribble the ball inside to create breakthroughs, while the three attacking pillars helped Mr. Kim's students regain control of the tempo, which they had lost in the first 45 minutes. The Vietnamese team controlled the match better, with passes to create opportunities.
Tien Linh scored again against the Laos team
Compared to the first half, the Vietnamese team still passed long from the defense, but the drop point began to fall into the gap in the Lao defense. After Duy Manh made a pass more than half the length of the field for Vi Hao to head the ball past the post, Tien Dung kicked the ball very accurately for Hai Long to run down and finish into the roof of the Lao net, opening the score of the match in the 58th minute. Once again, the passes from the defense became the "savior" of the Vietnamese team, just like when coach Park Hang-seo was still in charge.
This is also the key that helps the Vietnamese team to remove the psychological burden. Only then can coach Kim Sang-sik's students play short passes, control the game and launch a true attack. Quang Hai made his mark by stealing the ball for Tien Linh to double the gap, then the midfielder born in 1997 passed the ball for Van Toan to score in a one-on-one situation. Compared to the midfield lacking ideas in the first half, the Vietnamese team played more smoothly and smoothly. The long-range goal by rookie Van Vi in the final minutes ended the opening match, although it started off poorly, but ended well.
However, there is still much to say about coach Kim Sang-sik's team. The ability to dominate the match is a problem, as the Vietnamese team was stuck with long, loose passes throughout the first half, even though the opponent was Laos, considered the weakest team in the group. The Vietnamese team's moves up the flank and their coordination to open up space have not been clearly demonstrated. The pieces are still out of place in most positions, including the mistake that led to Dinh Trieu and Duy Manh's goal in extra time.
Luckily for the Vietnamese team, in the next round, coach Kim and his team will have a rest. The whole team will have 4 days of training to prepare for the match against Indonesia, which will take place at 8pm on December 15. Coach Kim Sang-sik confirmed that he has studied Indonesia's playing style from now on. Hopefully, with a thorough preparation process, the Vietnamese team will have 3 points in the next match.
