First rescue of the youngest victim

On the afternoon of March 16, a fire broke out at a 5-storey hotel on Hoang Huu Nam Street, Long Thanh My Ward, Thu Duc City (HCMC). Fire prevention and fighting police forces of the HCMC Police Department were dispatched to the scene to quickly extinguish the fire and rescue the victims.

Among them was a couple with two small children trapped on the rooftop and a couple trapped on the 4th floor.

After the incident, the online community spread the image of a firefighter with a dirty face carrying a baby out of the fire, making many people admire him.

That is Sergeant Nguyen Cong Hoang Kha (21 years old, living in Thu Duc City) - working at the Staff Team, Thu Duc City Area Team, Fire Prevention and Rescue Police Department (PC07), Ho Chi Minh City Police.

Speaking to Tuoi Tre Online , Kha said that at 2:53 p.m., after the unit received a report of a fire at a hotel on Hoang Huu Nam Street, Kha and the fire prevention and rescue police team quickly got in the car and went to the scene.

When he and his teammates approached the scene of the fire and broke down the doors to search for victims, Kha knocked on the doors of rooms from the first to the third floors that were empty. After running up to the fourth floor, he saw a couple trapped in the room, so he took them in and guided them down to safety.

At the same time, Kha ran to the top floor of the building and discovered a family of four including a couple and two children (3 years old and 2 years old).

Amidst the thick smoke, the young man used oxygen to quickly run up to the rooftop to approach the victim. Kha groped his way up to the rooftop and saw the father holding a 3-year-old child, and the mother holding a 2-year-old child. All four people were exhausted and panicked.

Immediately, Kha rushed to reassure: "We are here, don't worry, everything will be fine."

Hold the baby close to your chest

At this time, the 3-year-old girl in her father's arms cried loudly. The firefighter ran to comfort her and reached out to pick her up, held her in his arms and guided the whole family through the fire to the ground. Luckily, his teammates appeared at the same time and guided the whole family through the black smoke to the ground.

At this time, the smoke on the stairs was so thick that it was impossible to find the way. But thanks to Kha's flashlight, everyone was able to escape the toxic gas and get down to the ground. While carrying an 8kg oxygen tank on his back, and a 3-year-old baby in front, he went down 5 floors. Although he was very tired, the soldier still tried to hold the baby close to his chest, avoiding the building's components that could collide and fall on the baby at any time.

Kha said he was a new soldier who had been in the profession for more than 2 years, did not have much experience and was saving a baby victim for the first time. He was also somewhat confused by the baby's panic. When fighting fires, in addition to his trained skills, he also used his instincts as a person who loves children, so in that situation he only used his feelings to reassure: "It's okay, baby, I'm here, you'll be safe."

The entire rescue process happened very quickly. Kha recalled that it only took about 3 minutes. When all the family members escaped the fire safely, especially when the baby was returned to the family, he was a little moved.

The soldier was happy that the whole family was safe, the tiring "race" with the fire was almost gone. When he returned to the unit, Kha received a call from his family encouraging and sharing. He was very happy to have done a good thing.

Kha also received a photo of himself holding the baby girl from friends and relatives, which was shared online with words of encouragement. The photo shows the soldier's dirty face, almost exhausted, but not letting go of the baby.

Sergeant Kha shared that after completing his police service in 2023, due to his outstanding achievements, he was retained and assigned to work in fire prevention and fighting at the Thu Duc City area team.

Lieutenant Colonel Dao Hong Khanh, deputy team leader of the Thu Duc City Area Staff Team under PC07, said that at the unit, Sergeant Kha is a person who always strives to achieve many good results. Sergeant Kha's efforts are recognized by the collective, the Party Committee, and the command, and the greatest recognition is the introduction and admission of Sergeant Kha into the Party.

Soldier Kha's efforts are continuous, regular and have many achievements. Therefore, the unit finds that this soldier is qualified to be considered to stay in the People's Public Security force.

Recently, during the sports festival, soldier Kha was also an athlete of the unit participating in the competition and achieved remarkable results.
