Chelsea hosted Championship side Preston at Stamford Bridge in the third round of the FA Cup. With home advantage and a superior level to their opponents, Pochettino's side quickly took control of the match.
Despite dominating possession, Chelsea were ineffective in attacking in the first half. The home team only had 5 shots in the first 45 minutes, 3 of which were on target and no goals.
After the break, Chelsea accelerated and the home team broke the deadlock in the 58th minute. Gusto crossed the ball from the left into the penalty area, Broja jumped high and headed the ball diagonally, leaving goalkeeper Woodman no time to react.
High balls continued to be a powerful weapon for the home team. In the 66th minute, Palmer took a favorable corner kick for Silva to head into the Preston net, making it 2-0. The away team quickly collapsed after conceding the second goal.
Chelsea scored the third goal in the 69th minute, Sterling accurately executed a free kick from about 18 meters away, the ball went close to the left corner, leaving goalkeeper Woodman unable to block.
The 3-goal gap helped Chelsea touch the victory, but the home team did not stop. In the 85th minute, the away team player cleared the ball, hitting Sterling and flying to Fernandes, the Argentine player easily scored from close range, sealing a 4-0 victory for Chelsea.
