In general, the rate of domestic enterprises investing in deep processing of agricultural, forestry and fishery products is still low, but it is more or less a sign that there is a transformation to both increase export value and bring Vietnamese agricultural products to more markets.

Export to "difficult" markets
Starting from a small egg purchasing unit, thanks to bold investment in processing, the products of Vinh Thanh Dat Food Joint Stock Company (Vfood egg brand) are not only present in most provinces and cities across the country but have also been exported to Japan and Korea. Mr. Truong Chi Thien, General Director of Vinh Thanh Dat Food Joint Stock Company, shared that if only selling fresh eggs, it would be too simple, but the profit would not be high. Therefore, in 2015, the company decided to invest in machinery to produce stewed eggs, braised eggs, grilled eggs, etc. Not stopping there, in 2022, the company invested 5 billion VND to import machinery and equipment to make liquid eggs for consumption in restaurants, hotels, etc. and the product was also of interest to a Korean partner. The two businesses negotiated cooperation and the first container of liquid eggs from Vfood was exported to Korea in May 2023. Since then, the company has continued to invest in expanding factories, searching for markets and its products have been accepted by the "difficult" Japanese market.
Similarly, Ms. Ngo Tuong Vy, General Director of Chanh Thu Fruit Import-Export Corporation (Ben Tre), said that after more than 20 years of purchasing fruits, Chanh Thu Company has invested in processing factories to export fresh agricultural products to markets in China, the US, Japan, Korea, Europe, etc. With factories in Ben Tre, Khanh Hoa and Dak Lak provinces, Chanh Thu Company is capable of supplying more than 300,000 tons of fruit for export. In 2012, the US Department of Agriculture assessed and issued codes to fruit packers to ensure they met the conditions for export to the US market and Chanh Thu was the first Vietnamese company to successfully export rambutan to this market with a quantity of up to 200 tons. Following that, mangoes and lychees were also exported by Chanh Thu Company to the US and Japan. In 2023, the company started construction of Chanh Thu Dak Lak Fruit Processing Factory for Export with a capacity of 70,000 tons of raw materials/year and is expected to be constructed within 18 months. When the factory comes into operation, it will greatly contribute to the processing and packaging of fresh fruits such as durian, passion fruit, sweet potatoes, bananas... for export to markets such as China, Japan, the United States, Australia...

In 2016, GC Food Joint Stock Company (GC Food) built a coconut jelly factory with an area of 11,000m2 in Ho Nai Industrial Park (Trang Bom, Dong Nai), with the largest processing capacity in Vietnam at that time (over 20,000 tons of jelly/year). Mr. Nguyen Van Thu, Chairman of the Board of Directors of GC Food Joint Stock Company, recalled that during the process of participating in trade promotion, the company met Japanese partners and they really liked Vietnamese products, although they imported coconuts from Malaysia and Thailand. Therefore, the company cooperated with farmers in Ninh Thuan province to grow more than 200 hectares of aloe vera to ensure the source of raw materials for coconut jelly production. Currently, GC Food Joint Stock Company's products are present in more than 20 countries, including many large and demanding markets such as Japan, Korea, Europe, America, etc. Even in 2023, despite the difficult export market, the company was fully booked for the whole year. To meet orders, GC Food Joint Stock Company is expanding its raw material areas to Binh Thuan, Khanh Hoa and Phu Yen provinces.
In agriculture and agricultural processing, Vinamilk is indispensable. This unit is currently a dairy enterprise in the group of 36 largest dairy companies in the world in terms of revenue, and is also the 6th most valuable dairy brand globally. To achieve this achievement, Vinamilk not only invests heavily in raw material areas with a series of international standard farms in the provinces, but also focuses on processing. Vinamilk currently has more than 200 types of products such as: Vinamilk liquid milk, Vinamilk yogurt, Ong Tho and Ngoi Sao Phuong Nam condensed milk, Dielac powdered milk, Vfresh fruit juice...
According to a survey by the Institute of Agricultural Mechanics and Post-Harvest Technology (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), the proportion of deeply processed agricultural products in Vietnam is only about 25%-30%, half that of many countries in the ASEAN bloc. This is the biggest challenge for Vietnamese agricultural products.
