4 college degrees in over 6 years
That is the story of Tran Viet Dung (31 years old), from Thai Binh province. Dung was born into a family with a father who worked as a motorbike taxi driver and a mother who sold sugarcane juice on the street. At 11 months old, Dung contracted meningitis. Although he received timely emergency care, the consequences left him deaf in one ear.
After 12 years of high school, the 9X guy passed the entrance exam to study economics at the Foreign Trade University (Hanoi). Mr. Dung shared: "At that time, I didn't have a clear career orientation, but because I saw many seniors studying this major had good incomes after graduating, I took the exam. During my studies, I had the opportunity to meet many very good and inspiring teachers in the banking and finance industry. After that, I also learned about and found myself interested in this field, so I decided to study international finance at the Foreign Trade University."
Mr. Tran Viet Dung conquered 4 university degrees within 6 and a half years.
Because he took the entrance exam for the school in block A subjects (math, physics, chemistry), Dung had a hard time studying when he encountered documents and lectures in English. He said: "My classmates are very good at foreign languages, and when teaching, the lecturers often added a few English words that were difficult for me to understand, leading to a lack of confidence. From then on, I realized that if I was not good at English, I would be at a disadvantage and it would be very difficult to absorb knowledge, so I tried to learn this language."
Thinking is doing, Mr. Dung tried to learn English by himself to improve his level, but it was not very effective. Then he went to English teaching centers, but the tuition fees were high and the number of lessons was small, so in 2012 he decided to study and take the entrance exam for the English language major at the University of Foreign Languages, Hanoi National University to be able to study English every day. This meant that Mr. Dung had to study 3 majors at the same time.
"There was a time when I studied 16 subjects in a semester, having to run continuously between two schools. My schedule was packed from morning to afternoon, and I had to work part-time at night, so during that time I never went to bed before 2am and woke up after 6am," said Mr. Dung.
After 4 years of hard work, despite having to absorb a huge amount of knowledge, Mr. Dung graduated with a degree in economics with honors. At this time, the 9X guy only studied international finance and English, so the workload was not as heavy as before. Therefore, in 2015, Mr. Dung continued to register to study economic law to serve his future work. By the end of 2017, Mr. Dung completed all 4 university degrees.
Sharing the reason for pursuing 4 majors, the 9X guy said: "To become number 1 at the school I attend is impossible. So I chose to be different by pursuing 4 university degrees. I myself really want to study to expand my knowledge and have many career opportunities. The journey of studying 4 university degrees has equipped me with diverse knowledge and skills, at the same time motivating me to continue to explore, develop myself and be recruited into many multinational corporations".
What many people admire is that his family could not afford to pay for Dung to study for 4 university degrees at the same time, so he had to work as an English tutor to pay for his own tuition and living expenses. "During the day, I go to school, at night I tutor, and at night I study. There are times when I feel very stressed, but thanks to my passion for studying and having a clear goal, it has been the motivation that has helped me balance everything. I believe that motivation will pull me out of the pressure," Dung shared.
From a male student who was bad at foreign languages to an English teacher
After completing 4 university degrees, in 2018, Mr. Dung went to Ho Chi Minh City to work at a company while also teaching English. However, because he was so passionate about teaching, he quit his job at the company in 2020. "English is a very popular language, it opens up many job opportunities for learners. Therefore, I want to focus on teaching to inspire young people to learn foreign languages, and at the same time practice continuously," Mr. Dung shared.
Mr. Dung's admirable academic achievements
Mr. Dung's current English achievement is 8.0 IELTS and 990 TOEIC. However, few people know that he graduated from high school with an average degree because his English score was below 3 and his TOEIC entrance test at Foreign Trade University was only 235/990. So it can be seen that to have the current achievement is a long process of effort and perseverance of the 9X guy.
Proficiency in foreign languages has brought Mr. Dung many career opportunities, being recruited by many multinational companies. "One of the other important benefits of being good at foreign languages is that it is easy to change careers, being able to adapt to different job positions. This allows me to be flexible in pursuing new opportunities and different challenges in my career," said Mr. Dung.
Through the process of guiding and exchanging expertise with Mr. Dung, Dr. Dang Thi Minh Ngoc, a lecturer at the Faculty of Law and concurrently the Legal Inspection Department, Foreign Trade University (Hanoi), shared: "From Dung's journey of efforts, I realized that he is a progressive person, very hard-working and always trying to improve his qualifications. Normally, other students will ask their parents for money to go to school, but Dung works to pay for his tuition and sends money back to his mother. I really admire his efforts to improve and appreciate this young man's personality."
