The man, surnamed Sun (from Liaoning Province, China), said that his family had hidden from his grandmother the fact that his father had died of a rare cancer six months ago. Because she was 91 years old and had serious heart problems.
The family feared that the sad news might shock her, so they lied and said that Sun's father was sick and had to stay for treatment at a famous hospital in Beijing, China.
Sun said he had to use Deepfake technology in a video disguised as his deceased father to comfort his grandmother, after she repeatedly asked to see her son.
"Since my father passed away, I have avoided looking at photos and videos of him. However, I had to overcome psychological difficulties to compile photos of my father," he said.

Using old photos and face-swapping software, Sun mimicked his father's voice and recorded the video.
"Mom, I'm fine. I'm getting treatment in Beijing. The doctor can't completely cure the disease, but the situation is under control," Sun said in the video.
Before showing the video to his grandmother, Sun sent the video to his aunt for review. Sun said his grandmother was very happy to see the video and told him to take care of himself during his treatment and return home soon.
Since discovering his father's illness, Sun has taken him to dozens of hospitals in China and abroad for treatment. However, despite all his efforts, his father's condition has worsened. Sun himself finds it difficult to accept his father's passing, so disguising himself is a way for him to comfort himself.
The video of Sun telling the story of swapping faces and pretending to be his father posted on his personal account has attracted 5 million views. Many social media users expressed sympathy for Sun and acknowledged the positive side of AI (artificial intelligence).
"You are truly a filial grandchild. I hope your grandmother will always be healthy and optimistic," one person commented.
“Deepfake technology has really brought a positive side to this story. She probably knows what happened but she needs some comfort,” another shared.
This is not the first time someone has lied about the death of a family member. Usually, children will hide it from their elderly grandparents who are in poor health.
In other cases, parents hide the departure of important family members from their children before the university entrance exam so as not to affect their children's psychology.
