For Mr. Pham Thanh Nga (34 years old, in Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City ), going to sea and immersing himself in the vast nature used to be the greatest desire in his life. However, after a while, he gave up his job as a sailor, returned to shore and started a business with the traditional D'ran grilled spring rolls.
Decision bold
Born in D'ran Town (Lam Dong), Nga has had a special love for the ocean since he was a child. When watching movies about this topic, he often imagined the day he would stand on the deck of a ship, looking at the vast sky and earth.
Mr. Nga used to work at sea.
After graduating from high school, he applied for admission to the Faculty of Marine Science with a major in Ship Control and Management ( Ho Chi Minh City University of Transport). In 2012, after graduating from university, he started his dream job on the path to conquering the sea. During his time on the ship, he did many hard jobs and learned a lot of experience. Although he spent many days at sea, he made up for it with a monthly income of about 1,000 - 2,000 USD.
Sharing with Thanh Nien , Mr. Nga said that being a sailor is a beautiful memory of his youth. The times he went to sea, he was able to broaden his horizons and explore the world.
Currently, Mr. Nga owns many D'ran grilled spring roll shops in Ho Chi Minh City.
However, this job forced him to make many trade-offs when he had no time for his family. The long trips lasted 9-10 months, and he could only call home once a month. In 2018, his wife was pregnant with their first child and his grandmother passed away, so he decided to quit his job and give up his career at sea. He returned to take care of his family and started a spring roll business.
"The first days away from the sea, I missed it so much. As much as I missed home at sea, I also missed the sea just as much when I was home," Mr. Nga confided.
Mr. Nga talks about the reason for quitting his job as a sailor and switching to business.
Also in 2018, he opened a grilled spring roll restaurant called D'ran, following in his grandmother's footsteps in developing the family dish. At first, he did not receive support from his family. His mother strongly objected and his wife did not completely agree.
"When I was a child, at 3am every morning I would hear the sound of my grandmother, parents and aunts pounding meat. In the past, all the meat was pounded by hand, that sound kept ringing in my ears for many years, it was hard to forget. That was also one of the reasons why I was determined to do business with this dish," he confided.
He still remembers his time working at sea.
Ms. Nguyen Hoang Yen Vy (31 years old), Mr. Nga's wife, said that when she first learned that her husband wanted to start a business, she tried to stop him. She was not confident and was afraid of many risks that would occur.
"Mr. Nga is much more decisive than me. After listening to his persuasion, I agreed and worked with him. My husband and I have been together for more than a decade now. I am the supporter, standing behind to help my husband have more strength to face difficulties," Ms. Vy expressed.
Fearless
For Mr. Nga, the decision to change direction was a bold and reckless move. However, he wanted his life to have a special mark and achievements, so he has persisted until now.
In the first 6 months, the grilled spring roll restaurant continuously lost money. He had to manage the finances to maintain the premises, staff... In the face of those challenges, Mr. Nga never faltered or gave up.
He puts his heart into grilled spring rolls.
"When I first opened the shop, I worked hard every day from 5am to 11pm, I didn't even have time to take my kids out. But I was determined to follow my path, I believed that if I put all my mind and effort into it, I would definitely succeed," said Mr. Nga.
Many people think that spring rolls are delicious because of the sauce.
Mr. Nga also added that he has never regretted the choices he has made. He thinks that going to sea, like doing business, must have stormy times and calm times.
"The waves at sea are so scary but I still overcome them, so I try to do the same with difficulties in business," he said.
Mr. Nga runs a branch in Binh Thanh District.
Every day, the entire D'ran grilled spring roll system sells about 1,500 servings. He has devoted a lot of effort to learning and developing his family's grilled spring rolls, and has also made some changes to find the best recipe for making spring rolls and sauces. For the accompanying vegetables, he also buys hydroponic and organic vegetables himself to ensure food hygiene.
Ms. Pham Thuy Linh (32 years old, living in Thu Duc City) is a regular customer of the restaurant, said she has come back many times because she likes the restaurant's delicious sauce.
"I find the vegetables are always fresh and the spring rolls are delicious and to my taste. Today I had something to do near the restaurant so I stopped by because I missed this dish," she said.
