Zhang Lao San (1970) loved sports since he was young and wanted to become a swimmer. To help him pursue his dream, his parents hired a coach to teach him. Every day, he spent a lot of time practicing. It was not easy to get into the national team. Although Lao San was good, he still did not meet the requirements. In the end, he gave up his dream of becoming a swimmer.
Quit high paying job
Being an intelligent person, when he returned to class he quickly caught up with his friends. During his studies, Lao Tam liked Physics. In 1988, he took the university entrance exam and was admitted to the Physics Department of Wuhan University.
Master's degree holder quits job with salary of 3.4 billion/year, at 54 years old lives as a plumber
During his 4 years in college, he devoted himself to studying Physics. His idol was Einstein, and he wanted to become a good physicist. In his final year of college, he was confused when many companies took advantage of Physics research to make illegal money.
Disappointed with reality, after graduating, Lao Tam returned to his hometown to work part-time at a boiler factory. After that, he thought about the future and could not work as a worker all his life. Lao Tam determined to take the master's exam and passed the entrance exam to Peking University.
In 1995, he obtained a master's degree from Peking University. After graduating with a master's degree, he was invited to work at Huawei as a salesman. Thanks to his efforts, he was highly appreciated by his superiors and transferred to the R&D (research and development) department.
Later, he became a senior engineer at Huawei. At work, Zhang Lao San achieved many positive results and continuously received the title of outstanding employee. His opportunities for promotion and salary increase at Huawei were relatively open. At that time, Huawei paid him a salary of 1 million yuan/year (3.4 billion VND).
From master to plumber
However, when his career was developing, Zhang Lao San quit his job because he could not stand the loneliness. In his mind, he still thought about sports and his dream of becoming an athlete. After quitting his job at Huawei, he invested his savings in a table tennis gym.
He saw the prospect of opening a table tennis gym. However, due to lack of business experience and not understanding the market well, the gym he opened was forced to close down not long after due to lack of customers.
Failing in business, he continued to think about the future. At that time, many Chinese people flocked to work abroad. They believed that jobs abroad had high incomes and great opportunities to get rich. Following the trend, Lao Tam applied for a visa to Canada in the hope of demonstrating his own value.
He did not know how difficult it was to find a job abroad, especially in the technical field because of the relatively strict control of qualifications. In Canada, technical jobs require a high level of expertise. Even if you have good skills but not high expertise, it is difficult to find a job. Most people who go abroad work as waiters or dishwashers in restaurants.
Although he had a bachelor's degree from Wuhan University and a master's degree from Peking University, he could not use either when he came to Canada. In China, Lao Tam was proud of his English skills. However, when he came to Canada, his pronunciation was quite heavy and difficult to understand, making communication difficult.
To earn money for living expenses, Lao Tam was forced to wash dishes at a restaurant. Despite the hardship, he had no intention of returning to China. During the day, he worked for hire and at night, he studied for the entrance exam to a university in Canada.
Hard work paid off, Lao Tam was admitted to the University of Waterloo (Canada) to study Fire Engineering. After obtaining his master's degree, he hoped to get a job in Canada. However, it was not easy to find a job as a fire engineer, even though he had the expertise, he still could not find a suitable job.
Lao Tam had no choice but to go to the construction site and start installing water pipes. The job did not require any qualifications, but provided Lao Tam with a stable income while in Canada.
Truong Lao Tam's daily work is to install water pipes according to the contractor's request, maintain and repair. Gradually, he found joy in his work. Currently, Lao Tam has settled in Canada and started his own family.
