Unwanted teenage pregnancies pose health risks to both mothers and newborns. To provide knowledge about reproductive health (RH), relevant authorities have carried out many practical activities, typically protecting and caring for the health of adolescents.
Communication activities to raise awareness about reproductive health have been included in schools. Units and schools in the province have integrated reproductive health, sexual health and gender education for students into the curriculum; diversified forms of education, such as thematic talks, adolescent health clubs; consulted and encouraged students to contribute opinions on content, programs, educational activities and other documents related to population, reproductive health, etc.
The Adolescent Club with Comprehensive Sexual Education established by the Provincial Family Planning Association has recently organized many useful activities for adolescents at schools: Provincial Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities, Ha Long Specialized High School, Van Lang Primary, Secondary and High School... The club activities have become a "bridge" between the members of the club and all students in schools in the area in accessing in-depth knowledge related to gender equality, reproductive health, sexual health...
By participating in the club, students have access to more practical and in-depth knowledge related to reproductive health and safe sexual health. Extracurricular activities also help many students to be open, confident, bold in sharing and resolving problems related to preventing sexually transmitted diseases, safe sex; preventing unwanted pregnancies and the harmful effects of unsafe abortion. At the same time, they receive counseling and pre-marital health check-ups; and advice on using appropriate contraceptive methods for adolescents and young people...
According to Ms. Pham Thi Thu, Head of Communications Department, Provincial Family Planning Association, adolescents' psychology is not yet stable, so participating in these extracurricular activities provides them with knowledge about health, as well as counseling and solutions to psychological difficulties at their age. Through this activity, it contributes to promoting and mobilizing the implementation of family planning to improve the quality of life for them in the future.
The province currently has 198 junior high schools that have effectively built and maintained the model of "Young Propaganda Team", promoting the protection and care of children's health. From 2020 to present, the units have coordinated with a number of sectors and localities to provide training on adolescent reproductive health care for more than 500 young propaganda team members in localities; implemented communication on adolescent reproductive health care and pre-marital health counseling for thousands of students in the area. Thereby contributing to significantly reducing the rate of sexually transmitted diseases, reducing the rate of abortion among adolescents and young people; especially reducing the rate of children born with birth defects and congenital disabilities.
In recent times, the provincial Department of Health and Population has actively coordinated with localities and educational institutions to promote communication and education; strengthen the integration between communication and the provision of counseling services, pre-marital health examination, and reproductive health for adolescents and young people. In 2022, the Department of Population and Family Planning (Department of Health) guided and directed 6 units, namely Ha Long City, Mong Cai City, Uong Bi City, Cam Pha City, Quang Yen Town, Hai Ha District to organize 25 communication sessions for 1,000 young people in industrial parks and factories located in the area on the content of sexual health and family planning through thematic talks, community consultations, etc.
Only when they are clearly aware of their bodies can they take care of their own health, especially issues related to reproductive health and safe sex. Therefore, health care and education activities for adolescents and young people to prevent unwanted pregnancies, in addition to the participation of functional units, require the cooperation of all levels, sectors, organizations, especially families.
