“Diseases have no borders and can spread from one country to another. Making Vietnam safer means the US and the rest of the world will also be safer and healthier. That is also the perception of leaders on both sides, and therefore healthcare remains an important pillar,” said Eric.

As the Vietnam-US bilateral relationship approaches the 30-year milestone, the US CDC Country Director in Vietnam reviewed the outstanding milestones in bilateral health cooperation.

In the Joint Statement during US President Joe Biden's visit to Vietnam in September 2023, Vietnam and the US emphasized strengthening cooperation in ensuring health security, detecting and responding to the Covid-19 pandemic and global epidemic risks, completely and firmly controlling the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and eliminating tuberculosis by 2030...

“When there were no effective HIV treatments, Vietnam and the US actively cooperated to support people with health problems. Then, when there was a series of H5N1 outbreaks in 2005 or more recently during the Covid-19 pandemic, Vietnam and the US quickly coordinated to come up with timely and effective response plans,” said Mr. Eric Dziuban.

The upgrading of the relationship between the two countries to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2023 will also contribute to further promoting cooperation in the health sector between the two countries. According to Mr. Eric, this is an important milestone, making both sides further enhance their sense of cooperation, contributing to opening up new potential cooperation opportunities.

Currently, the US CDC in Vietnam is still working closely with the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, medical facilities, agencies under the Ministry as well as universities and regional public health institutes to support Vietnam in this field.

Coming to Vietnam in 2021, when the Covid-19 pandemic was raging, Mr. Eric commented that Vietnam has a very strong public health system, responding quickly in emergencies. These factors helped Vietnam quickly control the pandemic through the process of tracing, quarantining, and urgently deploying vaccines. The spirit and efforts of Vietnamese health workers in participating in epidemic control also made the Director of the US CDC in Vietnam "admired".

According to the US CDC National Director, the Covid-19 pandemic has contributed to making the global health system more aware of the need to adapt to rapid changes and potential risks.

Vietnam's development of the Vietnam National Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Central, according to him, is one of the great efforts to respond to potential epidemic threats. On the US side, CDC is ready to accompany and support testing programs, emergency response centers, human resource development...
