Viet Duc Friendship Hospital (Hanoi) said that doctors at the hospital's Emergency Department recently admitted a 31-year-old male patient, a foreign national, to the emergency room due to severe abdominal pain.
Through medical history, the patient said that at about 12 o'clock that same day, he had inserted a large eel into his anus.
The eel was still alive when doctors removed it from the stomach of a 31-year-old male patient.
At the hospital, the patient was immediately examined, filmed, tested, and had an ultrasound. On the ultrasound image, a long radiopaque "bone frame" appeared in the abdomen, crossing the abdomen from left to right.
Specialist Doctor 2 Le Nhat Huy, Deputy Director of the Center for Colon and Rectal Surgery - Perineum, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, said that for this case, the hospital immediately arranged a team of endoscopists, anesthetists, and performed colonoscopy to remove the foreign object endoscopically through the anus. However, when inserting the endoscope through the anus, the surgical team discovered a large lemon, 4 cm in diameter, blocking the rectum. Therefore, the doctors could not access the eel through the anus.
With the patient's pain increasing, the on-call team decided to perform emergency surgery.
When opening the abdomen, the doctors discovered a live eel, about 65 cm long and 10 cm in circumference, in the patient's abdomen. The eel had bitten through the patient's rectum and colon to crawl out of the abdomen.
After removing the eel, the doctors pushed the lemon out through the anus. After checking that there were no other foreign objects, the perforated rectum-colon was sutured.
Because the rectum was very dirty and fecal fluid was leaking into the abdominal cavity, the doctor decided to remove the upper part of the colon from the abdominal cavity to prevent feces from flowing through the newly sutured hole.
According to Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, in the past, the hospital's doctors had performed surgery to remove through the anus of patients admitted to the hospital, tools such as: bottles of essential oils, glass cups... However, this is the first time a case of a live animal, an eel, was inserted into the rectum and bitten through.
Eels are animals that can live in anaerobic conditions for a long time and can puncture the digestive tract. Therefore, absolutely do not put foreign objects or animals through the anus to create a strong feeling, because it can be harmful to health.
