4-lane highway can increase maximum speed from 80 km/h to 90 km/h
Báo Thanh niên•14/05/2023
The Vietnam Expressway Administration (Ministry of Transport) has just reported to the Ministry of Transport to study and evaluate the overall possibility of increasing the operating speed (maximum allowed speed) for the 4-lane expressway with a lane width of 3.5m from the current 80 km/h to 90 km/h.
Mai Son - QL45 Expressway has 4 lanes, maximum speed allowed is 80 km/h
Recently, many North-South expressways in the East, Ha Long - Van Don - Mong Cai, Bac Giang - Lang Son, Trung Luong - My Thuan, My Thuan - Can Tho have been put into operation. In the context of economic resources remaining difficult, in order to be consistent with the ability to balance capital sources and ensure investment efficiency, the National Assembly and the Government have approved the policy of dividing investment into phases to build a number of routes with a cross-section of 4 lanes and a design speed of 80 km/h. Of which, some expressway sections have completed investment and construction according to the phased plan and put into operation such as Cao Bo - Mai Son and Trung Luong - My Thuan sections. Some routes will be completed and put into operation in 2023 such as Mai Son - QL45 - Nghi Son, Nha Trang - Cam Lam and Vinh Hao - Phan Thiet. Based on the comparison of the national highways currently operating at 80 km/h and the regulations, the Vietnam Expressway Administration believes that the increase in the maximum speed of the expressways in the phase of 4 lanes from 80 km/h to 90 - 100 km/h is reasonable. This adjustment will contribute to increasing the travel speed of vehicles participating in traffic, improving the service level of the route, contributing to improving the investment efficiency and efficiency of the route, promoting the socio-economic development of the routes passing through.
Which highway can increase to 90 km/h?
For the expressways invested in construction with 4 lanes that have been put into operation such as Cao Bo - Mai Son, Trung Luong - My Thuan, the Vietnam Expressway Administration recommends that the Ministry of Transport consider raising the maximum speed limit on the routes to 90 km/h for some types of vehicles such as cars, passenger cars with up to 30 seats (except buses). Trucks with a load capacity of 3.5 tons or less, the remaining vehicles maintain the maximum speed limit of 80 km/h approved in the operation plan. Particularly for the Cao Bo - Mai Son route, there are some sections of the route that currently do not have a median strip, the maximum speed limit for these sections remains the same. For the North-South expressways with 4-lane construction phases and being prepared for operation in 2023 and the following years such as Mai Son - QL45, Vinh Hao - Phan Thiet, QL45 - Nghi Son, Nghi Son - Dien Chau, Nha Trang - Cam Lam, it is recommended that the Ministry of Transport direct project management boards and investors to immediately review traffic organization plans, research and propose to consider increasing the maximum speed allowed on the routes to 90 km/h for some types of vehicles. In the next phase, the Ministry of Transport assigns road management agencies to summarize and evaluate the pilot as a basis for mass implementation. Continue to study and consider increasing the maximum speed allowed to 90 km/h for the remaining vehicles allowed to participate in traffic on the expressway such as passenger cars with more than 30 seats; trucks with a load capacity of over 3.5 tons; tractors pulling semi-trailers; motorcycles; Special vehicles on these highways.
