Police chase truck more than 30 km on Phan Thiet highway

Binh Thuan: When asked by the police to stop for inspection, Nguyen Van Tri, 36 years old, drove a truck for more than 30 km and then blocked the Vinh Hao - Phan Thiet highway, causing traffic jam at noon on January 12.

At around 9:30 a.m., the Traffic Police of Binh Thuan province asked a truck carrying goods with a Nam Dinh license plate running on National Highway 1, through Vinh Hao commune, Tuy Phong district, to stop to check for alcohol and drug levels.

According to the police, driver Tri got out of the car but did not show any documents and did not comply with the inspection. He suddenly returned to the cabin, drove the truck and fled onto the Vinh Hao - Phan Thiet highway, in the direction of Ninh Thuan - Ho Chi Minh City.

The patrol team coordinated with the Traffic Police Department (Ministry of Public Security) on duty on the highway to give chase. Blocked by the police car, Tri still drove the truck straight ahead, continuing to disobey orders.

After chasing for more than 30 km, when reaching the section through Bac Binh district, near Cho Lau intersection, the traffic police stopped the truck, but Tri turned the wheel causing the truck to spin sideways, occupying both lanes from north to south, causing local congestion.

About half an hour later, the truck was taken by a special vehicle to the Bac Binh District Police headquarters. The driver is currently being detained by the police for questioning.

The Vinh Hao - Phan Thiet Expressway is over 100 km long, mainly running through Binh Thuan province, and will be put into operation on May 19, 2023. The route does not have an emergency lane, but only emergency stops every 4-5 km, with a maximum speed of 80 km/h. This is one of five expressway sections connecting Ho Chi Minh City with Nha Trang, with the Cam Lam - Vinh Hao section currently unfinished. Since its opening, many accidents have occurred on the Vinh Hao - Phan Thiet Expressway.
