According to statistics, fires in traditional markets often cause very serious property damage. Fires occur when business is busy, goods are concentrated, especially at the end of the year, holidays, and Tet, when fire prevention and fighting work is neglected.

Previously, on May 7, a fire broke out at a traditional market in Ea Sup district (Dak Lak). When the fire broke out, authorities, traders and local residents tried to put out the fire. However, due to hot and dry weather conditions combined with many flammable goods, firefighting efforts were difficult.

The fire burned down hundreds of kiosks, causing estimated damage of tens of billions of dong.

Earlier, on the morning of April 22, a kiosk in Binh Thanh market (Thanh Binh, Dong Thap) also suddenly caught fire. The fire quickly spread and engulfed all 17 kiosks in flames with many loud explosions. The fire did not cause any human casualties but many properties were burned down.

Tam Bac Market (Hai Phong) fire broke out

Not only that, on the morning of February 12, Tam Bac market, also known as Do market (Hong Bang district, Hai Phong city) caught fire, causing the entire market with an area of over 4,600 m2 to be engulfed in flames.

Dozens of fire trucks from the City Police, the Hai Phong City Military Command, the Hai Duong and Thai Binh Provincial Police, and hundreds of soldiers were mobilized to handle the fire. After more than 4 hours of effort, the fire was brought under control.

According to the representative of the Vietnam Fire Prevention and Rescue Association (PCCC&CNCH), the characteristics of traditional markets are that there are many goods, arranged in a messy manner, encroaching on the aisles. In addition, the electrical system is not regularly inspected and maintained, degraded, and fire prevention items are not guaranteed.

This representative also commented that traditional markets currently contain many types of flammable goods. Once a fire breaks out, it will spread very quickly, causing serious damage.

The intricate electrical system in the markets caused the fire to spread.

A representative of the Fire Prevention and Rescue Police Department (Ministry of Public Security) said that in order to proactively prevent fires at traditional markets, management boards and teams at the markets need to increase propaganda and mobilize traders to voluntarily and proactively implement fire safety measures.

In traditional markets, the electrical system needs to be separated into business electricity. When installing, it is necessary to carefully calculate the capacity and current consumption to avoid overload. Regularly check the electrical system, repair, upgrade, and replace when there are signs of deterioration or damage.

When closing, businesses need to carefully check the power source, turn off the power in the area, leaving only the power source for security purposes. Businesses absolutely must not arbitrarily pull the power.

Market management boards also need to urge businesses to arrange and display goods reasonably and scientifically, without encroaching on aisles. Businesses selling products with high risk of fire and explosion need to take measures to ensure fire safety.

The representative of the Fire Prevention and Rescue Police Department recommended that it is necessary to regularly train businesses in traditional markets on fire prevention and fighting, establish a fire prevention and fighting team with a sufficient force to be on duty, patrol, and detect fires early for timely handling.

In particular, traditional markets often have the practice of worshipping the God of Wealth and burning incense right in the business area. Fire prevention forces warn that this is a major risk of causing fires due to carelessness.
