Security experts from Palo Alto Networks have just discovered a new malware attack campaign with sophisticated tricks through Google search results.
Malware is being spread by hackers through Google Search |
According to a report from Palo Alto Networks' Unit 42 cybersecurity department, hackers have been impersonating GlobalProtect VPN software, placing ads on Google Search to lure users to visit malicious websites.
When users visit these malicious websites, they are tricked into downloading a software downloader called WikiLoader, disguised as GlobalProtect software. WikiLoader then downloads other malicious code, steals information, and allows hackers to take control of the device remotely.
Researchers say this is a fairly new form of cyber attack by hackers, shifting from traditional phishing attacks to SEO (Search Engine Optimization) to expand the pool of potential victims.
WikiLoader has been active since late 2022 and is constantly being updated with sophisticated methods to bypass security measures. Educational and transportation organizations in the US have been victims of this cyberattack campaign.
Experts advise users to be cautious when downloading software from the internet, especially from Google search results. Always double-check the source and authenticity of the website before downloading any files.
