South Africa warns of scams impersonating government and president
The South African President's Office has warned of a scam message claiming victims will be punished by President Ramaphosa or the government if they do not transfer money to the bank account numbers in the message.
"The President has not requested any money, or approved any payments or contracts with third parties, in any advertisements, social media, emails, letters, text messages or phone calls. If you receive information of this type, we recommend that you immediately cease all further communication with the scammers in case you are asked to transfer money, and contact the police immediately," according to the government's notice.
In addition, the South African Department of Statistics spoke of a case where a website organized recruitment for the agency.
"The HR Database is not yet open, and we have not issued any recruitment requests at this time," the South African Bureau of Statistics confirmed.
The South African Department of Statistics uses two agency platforms for recruitment: the first is the personnel database for short-term positions and the online recruitment platform (e-Recruitment) for permanent positions. Therefore, the above website was created by scammers.
