Amazon has just issued a warning about people impersonating Amazon to commit acts that harm consumers in Vietnam. This form of fraud targets individuals and Vietnamese businesses selling on Amazon. This is a new and sophisticated form of fraud.
Faced with this phenomenon, Amazon has issued a warning that Amazon Global Selling Vietnam will never ask sales partners or the public to transfer money to invest in business or make any online payments to any investment program. Amazon affirms that all such requests are fraudulent and have no relation to Amazon Global Selling Vietnam.
“To avoid being scammed, please only contact Amazon Global Selling Vietnam through our official channels and report these suspicious behaviors so we can investigate. In Vietnam, our official channels are at the website: www.sell.amazon.vn,” said an Amazon representative.
In addition, recently there have been cases of impersonating large businesses such as Dien May Xanh, banks, etc. to commit fraud, causing many people to have their property stolen.
Accordingly, some subjects claiming to be Dien May Xanh employees called to sell products directly, invited customers to buy warranty packages, and asked customers to evaluate products... Then, the subjects asked customers to transfer money to receive gifts and appropriated property.
There was a specific case where Dien May Xanh discovered a person claiming to be a company employee inviting customers to participate in product reviews to receive money or gifts from a gratitude program.
According to the Ministry of Information and Communications, recently, some subjects have used fake landline and mobile phone numbers, claiming to be from the Ministry of Information and Communications, the Police, the Procuracy, Banks, telecommunications networks, etc. to call people's landline and mobile phone numbers. The purpose of these subjects is to collect information to intimidate and defraud people, thereby appropriating their property. This phenomenon is on the rise and becoming more complicated, causing public outrage and affecting the activities of many agencies, organizations and individuals.
To prevent fraud through impersonation calls, the leaders of the Ministry of Information and Communications have directed the Department of Telecommunications to deploy the assignment of identification names (Voice brandname) for telephone numbers which are hotline numbers of units under the Ministry of Information and Communications; at the same time, assign identification names to mobile and fixed telecommunications networks such as VNPT, Viettel, MobiFone, FPT... This solution is assessed to help people raise their vigilance against the methods and tricks that subjects often use to commit fraud.
The Ministry of Information and Communications also stated that phone numbers calling people claiming to be units under the Ministry or telecommunications enterprises, but not displaying the accompanying identification name, are all fake phone numbers, showing signs of fraud.
When receiving calls from fake phone numbers, people need to report to the numbers receiving reports on spam calls and calls with signs of fraud of the Ministry of Information and Communications, which are 156, 5656, or report to the telecommunications business managing their subscribers to request handling.
The Information Security Department (Ministry of Information and Communications) said that impersonation fraud is also a common form in Vietnam. The Department will continue to promote communication activities to raise public awareness, such as developing and publishing Handbooks on identifying and preventing online fraud and Online Safety Handbooks to issue warnings and timely recommendations to help people protect themselves online.
The Information Security Department also conducts large-scale propaganda campaigns, in coordination with units, organizations, large enterprises, and press and media agencies to raise awareness and skills in preventing online fraud among people. In 2024, the Department will complete the content of the campaigns, have a more systematic strategy, be more suitable to reality, and bring more substantial results.
In addition, the Department also built and developed the National Cyberspace Portal information channel (khonggianmang.vn) on social networking platforms to provide information and propagate information security issues, especially online fraud.
