In fulfillment of its transparency obligations under the Agreement on Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) of the World Trade Organization (WTO), on August 14, 2024, the United States sent notification code G/TBT/N/USA/2137 to WTO member countries regarding safety standards for children's toys containing button or coin batteries.
Specifically, to prevent children from coming into contact with and swallowing toy batteries if they fall out, the draft adds requirements for performance and warning labeling for battery-operated children's toys containing button batteries or coin batteries.
At the same time, the draft also proposes adding testing requirements for fixing screws, minimum requirements for threaded screws, sequential use, and enhanced testing (pressure drop, impact, crushing, tension, compression, and conformity verification testing).
In addition, the Vietnam TBT Office requested the Ministry of Industry and Trade to provide information to Vietnamese businesses that manufacture and export related products to the United States.
For businesses, the TBT Office requests that business associations and VCCI update information to better prepare and meet the requirements of the regulations when exporting to the US market. At the same time, businesses should provide feedback to the Vietnam TBT Office regarding any difficulties they encounter in complying with the regulations when exporting the aforementioned products to the United States, if any.
For the Standards Board and the Quality Management & Conformity Assessment Board - National Standards and Quality Measurement Committee, the TBT Office recommends studying the draft US standard to propose appropriate policies.
