Canadian university representatives advise Vietnamese parents and students on a variety of information such as study permits, scholarships, etc.

Apply for a study permit early

Attending the seminar on study permits held on October 13 by CEI Vietnam Company, a representative of the Canadian Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City advised candidates to submit their study permit applications online as soon as possible to be able to enroll in universities and colleges in this country. Because the average time for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to process applications is 8 weeks, or about 2 months.

According to the representative, applicants need to prepare all necessary documents, including online application, passport, financial proof. In addition, applicants also need to ensure that they attach all pre-issued documents such as acceptance letter from designated educational institution, certificate letter from province or territory, visa fee payment receipt and biometric testing fee...

An important requirement in the application is financial proof. Specifically, applicants need to prove that they have CAD 20,635 (VND 371 million), in addition to tuition and travel expenses in the first year. To increase the reliability of the application, the representative of the Canadian Consulate General recommends that applicants submit tuition payment invoices, bank statements for the last 6 months, tax receipts, savings books, etc.

For applicants under 17 years old, in addition to a copy of a valid passport or travel document, parents must also submit notarized guardianship documents to be considered for a study permit. Meanwhile, applicants over 18 years old must submit a criminal record from the country where they have lived for 6 months or more in the past 10 years.

The representative of the Canadian Consulate General also noted that according to the latest regulations of IRCC, candidates who want to apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) in the near future must demonstrate their proficiency in English or French. This person also noted that students studying at colleges or participating in short-term programs must graduate from majors that are in shortage in Canada to be eligible to apply for a PGWP.

"We encourage candidates to learn about the Canadian Occupational Classification based on Education, Experience and Responsibility (NOC TEER 2021), then compare it with their future career plans to choose a field of study. This will give them an advantage when applying for permanent residency programs in Canada later," he shared.

Admission policy remains stable

Although there have been many changes in study abroad policies at the national level, university and college representatives have said that they will maintain stable admission policies at the school level. For example, Mr. Nao Yamamoto, international admissions officer at the University of Toronto, said that the university is not much affected by the restriction on granting study abroad permits. "You can feel secure in registering for admission and applying for study abroad permits," the representative of Canada's number 1 school affirmed.

Agreeing, Ms. Breska Ulhaq, global promotion specialist at Mohawk College, said that despite being affected by the new government regulations, the school will maintain its admissions policy next year. "Grade 12 students only need to submit their high school diploma, transcripts and English certificates," Ms. Ulhaq shared. The school also established a facility specializing in training skilled workers to meet the new regulations on PGWP.

According to Breska Ulhaq, Mohawk College's global outreach specialist, the college's admissions policy remains the same despite the changes at the national level.

According to Ms. Ulhad, the rate of Vietnamese students attending school this school year is still increasing even though the rate of international students enrolling at the school tends to decrease. "Vietnam is one of our key markets. Vietnamese students are always focused on studying and have great qualities. Thanks to that, they have a high rate of approval for study permits," she shared.

Angela Liang, director of marketing, recruitment and international relations at Vancouver Community College, said that for some highly competitive majors such as graphic design, dental technology or computer science, the school also requires applicants to attend an interview round to better understand the program. In addition, the school also gives priority to students who register early and meet the requirements.

Mr. Jin Liang, Director of International Market Development for East Asia and Southeast Asia at the University of Ottawa, said the school always maintains a 20% ratio of international students. "With this ratio, we ensure the diversity of student nationalities. This is an opportunity for Vietnamese students to integrate into the multicultural environment in Canada," Mr. Liang said.

According to a report from IRCC, Canada attracted more than 1 million international students to study in 2023. IRCC statistics also show that the total number of Vietnamese studying in Canada has been on a continuous downward trend, from 21,480 in 2019 to 16,140 in 2022. However, in 2023, Vietnamese students in Canada increased slightly, to 17,175 people and ranked 8th in terms of quantity.
