People hope that the authorities will soon take measures to completely handle the waste at landfill No. 8.
Landfill No. 8 has a total area of 42,943m2, of which the overlapping section with the North-South Expressway has an area of 12,859m2. The Cai Rang District Land Fund Development and Project Management Board has coordinated with the consulting unit to prepare design documents, estimate the relocation, and hand over the project construction site. The plan is to relocate the amount of garbage to both sides of the expressway to ensure the site for the My Thuan Project Management Board. The amount of garbage after being relocated to both sides of the North-South Expressway project has no cover, causing environmental pollution.
Mr. Tran Phu, Area 1, Ba Lang Ward, complained: “Since the relocation of the landfill, the stench has spread, affecting the lives of people around. Currently, the open-air landfill is located right at the gateway of the city. I request that the city's departments and functional agencies take immediate measures to handle the situation to ensure the city's beauty and the health of the people.” Ms. Tran Thi Kim Quyen, Area 1, Ba Lang Ward also shared: “The “garbage mountains” after the relocation are quite high, every time there is a strong wind, dust and debris from the landfill fly out, affecting the surrounding environment. I request that the functional agencies take immediate measures to completely handle the situation, returning a clean environment to the people.”
Talking to us about the above issue, Mr. Nguyen Quoc Toan, Chairman of Ba Lang Ward People's Committee, said: "Currently, landfill No. 8 has a volume of about 162,000m3. Every day, people are affected by dust and dirt from the "garbage mountains" flying out. We are very concerned that when the rainy season comes, water from the open garbage pile will overflow outside, affecting the households living nearby."
Currently, the volume of garbage from the overlapping section between the North-South Expressway and landfill No. 8 has been relocated by the Cai Rang District Project Management and Land Fund Development Board, 82,000m3, out of the clearance boundary, and the cleared site has been handed over to the My Thuan Project Management Board. However, the functional unit has not yet established a project to handle the relocated garbage volume. Mr. Tran Tien Dat, Deputy Director of the Project Management and Land Fund Development Board of Cai Rang District, said: “The amount of garbage moved to both sides of the North-South Expressway is quite high, in which the garbage on the right side is 8m high compared to the road surface, the garbage on the left side is 12m high compared to the road surface; although there is a 2.5m high fence surrounding it, it still affects the surrounding environment as reported by the people. We propose that the specialized agencies of the District People's Committee and the city's functional branches consider implementing a number of bidding packages to minimize environmental pollution in the coming time. Specifically, we will cover the area with tarpaulins, dig more ditches around to collect wastewater from the landfill, and limit the overflow of water when there is heavy rain. In the long term, we propose that the city's functional branches take measures to limit environmental pollution as well as ensure aesthetics when the North-South Expressway is completed and put into use."
