Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Hong Sinh, senior lecturer of the Faculty of Library and Information Science, University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Ho Chi Minh City National University), shares about the story of academic integrity.

Reputation damage due to breach of scientific integrity

At the international conference on social sciences and humanities organized by the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City on October 25, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Hong Sinh, senior lecturer of the Faculty of Library and Information Science of the university, emphasized the importance of research ethics and academic integrity. Because "no achievement is more important than honor", according to Ms. Sinh.

"We need to clearly understand the regulations on academic integrity, strictly implement them, and courageously condemn violations," Associate Professor, Dr. Sinh affirmed.

Ms. Sinh said that in an article published in the journal BMC Medical Ethics in 2021, the group of authors pointed out that 80.8% of cases of violations of academic integrity and research ethics were in the fields of medicine and health sciences, and 5.6% were in the fields of social sciences and humanities.

According to Ms. Sinh's observation, most researchers are aware of the role of academic integrity, but there are still cases of intentional or unintentional violations such as data falsification and information falsification, lack of consent from research participants, and lack of approval from the research ethics board.

What are the consequences of violations? According to Associate Professor Sinh, if the rights and interests of participants are not guaranteed, researchers can violate privacy; create psychological suffering; take advantage of and harm vulnerable groups... If the research results are invalid, policy makers will misunderstand and make ineffective decisions. Researchers also risk having their published articles withdrawn and their scientific reputation will be damaged.

"These are issues that young researchers need to pay attention to when choosing to enter the academic path to ensure ethics and integrity in research," Ms. Sinh noted.

How to quickly publish a scientific paper

Also at the conference, Dr. Nohman Khan, CEO of Connecting Asia (Malaysia), introduced an effective method of writing international articles, which is systematic review. He believes that scientific articles of this type will be easily published, even in influential journals. Researchers can also complete the article quickly because they only need to directly read and process available information.

According to Dr. Khan, systematic reviews aim to synthesize existing research, identify research gaps, promote evidence-based decision-making, and reduce bias in selecting available studies. To conduct research using this method, Mr. Khan advises young researchers to write a little bit every day.

"A systematic review is not a one-day process. It's a relatively tedious process, so practice it every day and you'll get results," Khan said.

Regarding international publishing experience, Professor Hamdan bin Said from the University of Technology, Malaysia, advises young researchers not to be discouraged after being rejected for publication the first time. "Ask the editors questions to find out what needs to be adjusted to improve and then submit. Repeat the process until your research is published. The important thing is to be aware of the shortcomings and make efforts to overcome them instead of being sad," Hamdan advised.

Professor Hamdan encourages young researchers to boldly present their needs when coming to the conference. "This is the best place to develop a network of relationships with other researchers. Express interest in their work, ask for their contact information, and send them your manuscript for feedback. If you come to the conference just to say hello, you will not learn anything," Mr. Hamdan said.

Regarding publishing costs, Mr. Hamdan suggested that young researchers should directly discuss with the governing body or organizations, research funds and state their contributions through the results and impact of their research on society. Mr. Hamdan also said that overcoming language barriers is a necessary condition for integrating into the international publishing environment. "I hope we can help each other to go further," Mr. Hamdan shared.

When young researchers publish science

At the conference, young researchers including undergraduates, graduate students and post-graduate students reported their research results. The young researchers went through a rigorous scientific publication process, from submitting manuscripts, reviewing, reporting to the subcommittee to publishing research results in the proceedings with ISBN index of Ho Chi Minh City National University Publishing House. The conference gathered more than 100 reports on many fields of study such as philosophy, literature, English teaching theory and methodology, education, psychology...
