GĐXH - Traditional Tet dishes, if not chosen wisely and scientifically by diabetics, can pose many potential health risks.

Tet brings with it a warm, family-friendly atmosphere. However, for people with diabetes , the lavish meals and changes in daily routines during Tet can pose many health risks.

Normally, the traditional Vietnamese Tet meal often includes dishes with a lot of meat and fat, starch, sugar and few green vegetables, which are not good for diabetics... These foods, if diabetics do not know how to choose wisely and scientifically, will be very dangerous.

How diabetics celebrate Tet intelligently and scientifically to stabilize blood sugar

Not too abstinent

Diabetics should practice eating slowly and enjoy small portions of their favorite foods. They should skip their usual dishes and replace them with Tet dishes because they only come once a year. However, they should also limit or avoid foods containing saturated fats such as animal fats, red meat, animal organs, rare meat, blood pudding, poultry skin, etc.

Eat on time

It is recommended to maintain the same meal times as usual. This helps to keep blood sugar levels stable. If Tet meals are later than usual, choose a light meal (snack) before the main meal.

Don't skip meals

When you skip meals, it is harder to control your blood sugar and you are more likely to overeat. You should divide your meals into smaller portions to avoid eating too much food at once, as being too full will cause your blood sugar to rise.

Increase intake of green vegetables and fruits

Diabetics should choose fresh, low-sugar fruits such as oranges, apples, grapefruits, etc. Limit some types that are too sweet such as jackfruit, dried fruit, ripe mango, durian and replace them with low-sugar, high-fiber fruits such as grapefruit, guava, plum, apples, etc. Eating whole fruits is better than blending or juicing. Nuts such as almonds, walnuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, and melon seeds are better when eaten as a substitute than jams.

Keep practicing

Diabetics need to combine a reasonable diet, moderate exercise as well as sports training to improve their health. Exercise helps keep the spirit refreshed, comfortable and reduces stress, this is a great way to help you control blood sugar levels.

Get enough sleep

People with diabetes are at risk if they don’t get enough sleep. The less sleep you get, the more you crave fatty, sugary foods and the harder it is to control your blood sugar.

Blood glucose monitoring

Watch for signs of low or high blood sugar to intervene early. Symptoms of hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, include dizziness, feeling irritable, hunger, and a fast heartbeat.

If your blood sugar is below 70 mg/dL (about 3.9 mmol/L), eat a piece of candy or 15 grams of fast-acting carbs, such as regular soda or fruit juice.

Some notes to help control blood sugar effectively

- You need to check your blood sugar regularly, always bring your medication, insulin, blood sugar meter and do not skip meals when traveling far away during Tet.

- You should eat breakfast according to the diabetic diet before visiting friends and relatives. This will help you avoid Tet foods.

- If your blood sugar is higher than normal, control your diet and increase exercise.

- You need to notify your family and doctor when your blood sugar is high, or you have symptoms such as fatigue, headache, thirst, dry mouth, fever, and frequent urination.
