The song “Di giua troi ruc ro” , the music from the TV series of the same name, suddenly became popular thanks to its catchy, youthful melody. However, this song and its author - singer Ngo Lan Huong - also faced a fierce wave of controversy over plagiarism.

Dan Tri reporter had a chat with Ngo Lan Huong about her chance to become a singer and recent scandals.
"At first, I just considered music as a walk in the park"
There was a time when Ngo Lan Huong was called "the cover saint", emerging as an internet phenomenon with million-view covers, before turning to professional singing. Can you share your memories of the early days of your career?
- For me, the early days of my career were very carefree years. I simply posted clips of myself singing and playing the guitar to satisfy my passion for music.
One of my most memorable memories was the first time my video went viral on social media platforms like YouTube and Facebook.
At that time, I was only in 12th grade, the clip was very simple. I still remember the image of me wearing a soccer jersey, holding a guitar and singing... in the toilet. Maybe people were interested in the image of a "silly" girl who was so passionate about singing that she went into the toilet to sing, so that clip became so famous.
It is known that in 2017, Ngo Lan Huong was a prominent name in Toc Tien's team in the Voice of Vietnam contest. However, after the contest, you chose to continue studying at the Foreign Trade University instead of entering showbiz. How did you feel at that time? Were you worried about being noticed but not seizing the opportunity?
- I respect my own decision. At that time, I just considered music as a hobby, not intending to be serious about the profession.
When Lan Huong decided to pursue a professional artistic career, how did her family react, supportive or opposed? Now that she has achieved some success, how do people react?
- My decision to pursue a professional music career was not sudden, but a gradual process. My family was not too strict about this issue.
However, in the beginning, my family, especially my mother, did not feel secure when her child pursued a singing career.
Later, I gradually proved to my family my seriousness and clear direction towards my career. And I also earned a good income from singing, so my family was no longer harsh on me and turned to support me wholeheartedly.
Now the family shows off their daughter everywhere (laughs).
After "Walking in the Glorious Sky", Ngo Lan Huong became more well-known.
"Di giua troi ruc ro" became the theme song of the film and was loved by many viewers. However, the film was originally scheduled to have 100 episodes, but it suddenly ended after 50 episodes. Do you feel any regret?
- I was quite surprised when I heard that the film's duration was cut in half. But I think the film crew had carefully considered this decision.
I’m not sad, just a little regretful. The longer the show runs, the longer my music will be on TV (laughs). But the show’s crew has revealed that there will be a second season. Who knows, maybe I’ll have the chance to continue working with the show in the second season?
Is there any reason or story why Huong's song was chosen as the theme song of the film?
- Actually, the film crew contacted me to order this song. "Di Giua Troi Ruc Rot" was written based on the story of the film. I researched the content of the film, to understand the personality of each character, to understand the message that the film conveyed before writing this song.
The process of completing the song took more than a month, from the time of receiving the invitation from the film crew until completing the demo, making the mix, and recording. The film crew intervened in editing the song a little bit, but not much.
The chorus of "Di giua troi ruc ro" is creating a "trend" on social networks. Many audiences, celebrities, and beauty queens have used the music to insert into their films. After this song became famous, did Lan Huong receive much attention from brands and advertising contracts?
- The popularity of the song helped me become more widely known. Although it was not my first hit , it was not until Di Giua Troi Ruc Rot that my recognition spread strongly.
I received more invitations to perform and attend events from universities and brands. Some clients even explicitly requested that I sing the song “ Di Giua Troi Ruc Roc” at the event.
However, some audiences think that the melody of the song is quite similar to the song "Nhở Mãi Nước Cuoi Xinh" by Dong Nhi and "Dung Làm Trai Tim Anh Đau" by Son Tung. How does Huong explain this opinion?
I affirm that "Di Giua Troi Ruc Rot" does not imitate any other song. I use a common chord progression in music, so the audience will feel familiar when listening.
"I'm missing the connection with my audience"
After gaining a certain position in showbiz, does Huong plan to participate in a program or music competition to increase her recognition and popularity with the public?
- I hope to get closer to the mass audience in the future through participating in suitable reality TV shows.
I know that my weakness is lack of connection with the audience due to not being active on social media.
If there is an invitation to participate in a reality show and I feel it is suitable, I will agree to participate.
In 2022, Lan Huong collaborated with rapper Ricky Star on the song "Xin dung long vong" to criticize toxic elements on social networks. In the near future, does Lan Huong have any plans or wishes to collaborate with any artists?
- I don't have any plans to collaborate with any artists yet. But I really like to interact and collaborate with other artists.
If in the future I have a suitable product to collaborate on, I will be very excited to send out invitations to suitable artists.
I have a "troublesome" fashion sense.
Lan Huong has impressed the audience with her increasingly beautiful appearance over time. But recently, Lan Huong has caused controversy when wearing clothes that were considered inappropriate. What can you say about this noise?
- I think my problem with clothes is because my fashion sense is a bit "complicated" and not very good. I like everything but I don't really understand my body shape so sometimes I choose clothes that don't suit me.
Recently, I have received a lot of attention, so the audience has a more critical view of me every time I appear. But that doesn't make me sad or depressed. I think that's good. Most of the audience comments to help me change, very few comments are negative or insulting.
My crew and I respect the audience very much.
In the future, I will improve my costumes based on sincere feedback from the audience to be the most neat in each appearance.
After the success of "Di giua troi ruc ro", Huong released the song "Anh sang nhan thanh", can you share a little about this new product?
- Following the success of "Walking in the Bright Sky" , I launched a music project called "Sincere Light" . The MV was made in the form of a reportage so it's not too elaborate.
This is a project to bring electric light to improve the lives of people in the highlands. I went to Tung Qua Lin village, Phong Tho district, Lai Chau province to attend the inauguration ceremony, install the last lamp post out of 100 lamp posts, give gifts, and play with local children.
It is known that Lan Huong is not only famous for her beautiful voice but also her talent in composing music. What new music projects are you currently nurturing?
- I am planning to release a mini album, if all goes well, it will be an album next year. It will be my own compositions and songs purchased from other musicians.
The project is still in its early stages so I don’t have much to share yet. I hope this project will go smoothly and be well received by the audience next year.
