This year, 2024, Bose celebrates 60 years of sound innovation by releasing a multi-generational study of music listeners that explores our emotional connection to music. The study explores our differences, loves, and similarities as humans and music fans—all to recognize the power of sound and the role Bose has played in delivering it since 1964.

From Elvis to Tupac, from the original Bose 901 speaker to the latest Bose Ultra Open Earbuds, music has evolved and so have Bose products, bringing fans closer to cultural moments defined by great music and the sounds it evokes – like memories of a day, a time or a place. Looking back at attitudes to music over the decades, Bose set out to understand how sound shapes fan communities and changes over time.

The study was conducted with more than 6,000 music fans across the US and UK, aged 18-64, asking questions about iconic artists, music genres and music discovery in an online survey between June 5 and June 12, 2024. The results were interesting.

First, across all generations, the music that young people listen to shapes their tastes for years to come. More than 80% of respondents said that if they had to choose one decade to listen to music for the rest of their lives, it would be the decade when they were in their teens and 20s.

At the same time, that nostalgia affects how we perceive “good music.” Like fashion and movies, many people tend to romanticize the music of the past. More than 60% of respondents agreed that music was better then than now.

Third, people still want to discover new music. Whether it’s Throwback Thursday or New Music Friday, the Hot 100 or Oldies Jams, most people are interested in discovering music from other eras. Across the US and UK, nearly 80% of music fans are open to discovering music from another generation.

Surprisingly, however, decades with artists like Beyoncé and Taylor Swift — iconic chart-toppers — weren't among the top decades respondents would choose to listen to for the rest of their lives...

Meanwhile, older artists may no longer be topping the charts but remain in the hearts of listeners as the most influential artists of their decade.

The study also found that there are still differences between generations. In the US, Gen Z and Millennials were more drawn to artists like Tupac and Eminem than older generations among those who chose the 1990s and 2000s as their preferred decade of music. In the UK, among those who chose the 1980s as their preferred decade of music, Michael Jackson stood out more to Gen Z (born between 1997 and 2015) and Millennials (born between 1981 and 1996) than to earlier generations.
