Phnom Penh Crown FC have made history by advancing from the group stage of this season’s AFC Cup. They have become the first Cambodian club to reach the inter-zone semi-finals of the Asian Cup.
Not only did Phnom Penh Crown make history for Cambodian football, they also brought home a series of important points for Angkor football in the Asian club rankings. They have won 5,300 points after their recent achievement, after winning 6 matches (including the preliminary round).
As Phnom Penh Crown is the only representative of Cambodia to participate in the Asian Cup, this score is also counted for the Cambodian Football Federation.
With 5,300 points, Cambodia even has a better record than Vietnam in this season's Asian Cup. We only have 5,267 points and have no chance to improve our score when both Hanoi FC and Hai Phong are eliminated.
Hanoi FC earned 6.00 points after two wins in the group stage against Wuhan Three Towns and Urawa Reds. However, Hai Phong only earned 3.33 points in the AFC Cup and 0.60 points in the AFC Champions League qualifiers.
The final score of the Vietnam Football Federation is calculated based on the average performance of Hanoi FC and Hai Phong (according to the AFC formula).
Thailand has the best result in Southeast Asia with 8,233 points thanks to the impressive performance of Bangkok United FC in the group stage. Malaysia is ranked 2nd with 6,000 points. Malaysia's number one club, Johor Darul Takzim, also performed quite impressively in the group stage despite being eliminated.
In terms of overall rankings (from the 2015 to 2023/24 season), Thailand and Malaysia are the top two leagues in Southeast Asia. They have a place in the AFC Champions League Elite (likened to Asia's C1) from the 2024/25 season.
Vietnam is only ranked third and has no chance to improve its performance. Therefore, we only have one place to participate in AFC Champions League 2 (Asian Cup C2). Singapore and Philippines are also in this group.
Meanwhile, Cambodia and Indonesia have a place in the AFC Challenge League (Asian C3 Cup) next season.
