NDO - On December 18, at a press conference ahead of the Vietnam International Defense Exhibition 2024 (Vietnam Defense Expo 2024), two aircraft manufacturers Boeing and Airbus revealed that they will bring many famous military aircraft models produced by the two companies to introduce at the Vietnam International Defense Exhibition 2024.
Representatives from both Boeing and Airbus expressed their commitment to supporting Vietnam's defense modernization goals, through advanced defense technology solutions, designed to enhance national capabilities and contribute to regional stability.
Mr. Dale McDowall, Vice President of Business Development for Southeast Asia, Defense, Space and Security of Boeing Corporation said: "During Boeing's working week within the framework of the exhibition, the company's leadership representatives had meetings with the Ministry of National Defense, the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam and met with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on the evening of December 18. We expressed our desire to invest in Vietnam, seek domestic partners and hope that the Ministry of National Defense will invest more in equipment, weapons and military equipment from Boeing to modernize Vietnam's military capabilities. Thanks to the strong support from the US Department of Defense, Boeing hopes that Vietnam will have more opportunities and potential for commercial cooperation in civil and military aviation."

Mr. Dale McDowall expressed that for the first time, at the Vietnam International Defense Exhibition 2024, Boeing displayed a booth introducing 4 defense and security products, combining rescue and relief capabilities.
Accordingly, the four products include the CH-47 Chinook heavy-lift helicopter, the MH-139 Grey Wolf multi-mission helicopter, the ScanEagle unmanned aerial system, and the Wave Glider unmanned boat. The CH-47 Chinook heavy-lift helicopter is an advanced, multi-mission helicopter with two main rotors arranged in parallel and overlapping (tandem rotor). The CH-47 Chinook's capabilities have been proven through missions such as cargo and troop transport, search and rescue, evacuation of casualties, special missions, humanitarian and disaster relief, and other missions.

The CH-47 Chinook helicopter has been widely used in the world, its outstanding feature is that it can lift cargo with a payload of up to 5 tons, the rescue process does not need to land on the ground, just need to stop at the mountain peak for the victim to approach. Currently, this heavy helicopter line is being used in more than 20 countries around the world, is the fastest military helicopter line in the world and can operate in all weather conditions. Therefore, this helicopter line is known as the "sky monster" of the US military.
“The CH-47 Chinook heavy-lift helicopter has been proven over 60 years of operation, and has been continuously improved and developed by the company. For countries with many mountains, islands, and natural disasters like Vietnam, where it is difficult to build airports with standard runway lengths, the CH-47 Chinook helicopter line is very suitable,” said Mr. Michael Nguyen, Director of Boeing Vietnam.

Mr. Michael Nguyen added that the products Boeing introduced at this exhibition are vehicles that both the Ministry of National Defense and the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam are interested in. In addition to the CH-47 Chinook heavy-lift helicopter, Boeing also introduced the MH-139 Grey Wolf multi-role helicopter, developed based on the Leonardo Helicopters AW139 helicopter. This type of helicopter can perform many missions such as patrolling, searching and rescuing, transporting VIPs, transporting troops and transporting cargo.
In addition, there are unmanned surface vehicles and unmanned aircraft. Wave Glider is an unmanned boat with outstanding durability, operating for a long time (some operate up to 12 months continuously) using solar batteries and wave energy. What is special is that this product line can operate alone or in formation at sea, collecting weather information, ship traffic at sea and underwater information. ScanEagle unmanned aircraft system has a durable operating time for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance activities. This is a tactical unmanned aircraft for both military and commercial use.
“The ScanEagle drone has been well proven with 1.5 million flight hours accumulated worldwide. With a continuous flight time of 18-19 hours, at an altitude of 5,800m and the ability to carry equipment, this product is very convenient when performing maritime security, surveillance and reconnaissance missions. With Vietnam's exclusive economic zone having about 60% of the world's maritime traffic passing through, Boeing is supporting the Vietnam Coast Guard to install, support test flights in Ba Ria-Vung Tau and provide technical training on operation and maintenance of this drone system,” added Mr. Dale McDowall.
For Airbus Group, Mr. Zakir Hamid, General Director of Airbus Defense & Space Asia-Pacific, said that one of the important defense products the company introduced at this defense exhibition is the C295 aircraft, a highly flexible medium-class tactical transport aircraft that has been demonstrating its quality and capabilities in military transport, medical emergency and air logistics missions.

Airbus also introduced the C295 MPA anti-submarine version; the H225M multi-role military helicopter; the H145 helicopter; and the next-generation Flexrotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAS). “Airbus is ready to cooperate with Vietnam to develop the C295 fleet and other versions, including the maritime surveillance version, to enhance Vietnam's air transport capabilities as well as its intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities in protecting Vietnam's airspace and territorial waters,” said Mr. Zakir Hamid.
In the field of space technology, Airbus is strengthening its commitment to strategic cooperation with Vietnam. At Vietnam Defence Expo 2024, Airbus will work to expand its cooperation with partners in Vietnam, focusing on developing and enhancing Vietnam's capabilities in space technology applications. These initiatives aim to open up future cooperation opportunities, with a focus on areas such as the development of data fusion, processing and transmission systems, the provision of high-resolution satellite imagery and secure communications systems.
Ms. Hoang Tri Mai, General Director of Airbus in Vietnam, said that in the context of Vietnam's defense spending forecast to grow at 5.6% annually by 2030, reaching 10.2 billion USD, Airbus has strategic advantages to accompany Vietnam in the process of defense modernization, providing advanced solutions and technologies to improve aircraft operation capacity, stabilize the regional situation and achieve long-term security goals.
