On October 23, immediately after being reported in some media, the national relic Xuan Lung Pagoda (also known as Pho Quang Pagoda), Xuan Lung Commune, Lam Thao District, Phu Tho Province caught fire at around 10:00 a.m. on October 23, 2024, the Department of Cultural Heritage (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism) issued a document requesting the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Phu Tho Province to direct the competent authorities to coordinate with local authorities to urgently inspect the site, take immediate measures to protect the national treasure Stone Buddha Altar, and at the same time assess the extent of damage and propose a solution, report to the People's Committee of Phu Tho Province and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism before 10:00 a.m. on October 24, 2024.
According to the report of Xuan Lung Commune People's Committee, at 9:45 a.m. on October 23, 2024, Xuan Lung Commune People's Committee received a report (reported by Mr. Nguyen Trung Hoan, Zone 6) of a fire at Pho Quang Pagoda. Upon receiving the report, the Commune People's Committee notified and mobilized cadres, police, military and local people to respond, and at the same time, the Commune People's Committee also reported to the District People's Committee and the district's functional agencies.
When the commune officials and residents arrived at the scene, the fire was already burning high. The commune People's Committee mobilized forces to be present at the scene using on-site equipment such as fire extinguishers, water hoses, buckets, basins... while waiting for the fire department to arrive.
At 10:30 a.m., firefighters arrived at the scene and took action, and by 11:30 a.m., the fire was completely extinguished. However, according to reports, the fire completely damaged the Tam Bao building, the temple facilities, and 27 statues. The national treasure, the Lotus Stone Pedestal, was observed to have broken lotus petals.
The report of Xuan Lung Commune People's Committee also assessed that Pho Quang Pagoda relic received socialized funding through works from artisan Dang Dinh Duy and agencies, units, businesses, philanthropists, children far from home and people inside and outside the commune. Estimated damage cost: 25 billion VND.
Authorities are currently cordoning off the scene and investigating the cause of the fire./.
Pho Quang Pagoda (also known as Xuan Lung Pagoda, Lam Thao District, Phu Tho Province) is a national historical and cultural relic, recognized by the State in Decision No. 92-VHTT/QD dated July 10, 1980 of the Ministry of Culture and Information (now the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism). The pagoda was built over 800 years ago and still preserves many valuable relics and antiques, especially the lotus stone pedestal - an ancient and skillful work of art from the Tran Dynasty (14th century).
