The visit to the market in central Seoul took place a day before the Chuseok holiday - the biggest holiday of the year for Koreans. Minister Oh introduced to the guests the model of the traditional market and the events held during the Chuseok holiday.
Kyungdong Market is a general wholesale market and the largest herbal medicine market in Korea. There are also many Vietnamese people doing business and trading here.
Ms. Oh Young Joo said that traditional markets still attract a lot of Korean people every day. During holidays, especially Chuseok, many people come to the market to feel the atmosphere of traditional markets and the culture of the nation.
Minister Oh expressed his belief that the traditional market model of Korea will be increasingly promoted to tourists from other countries so that traditional Korean products will become more widely known. In the future, traditional markets and products from the markets will become tourist attractions that attract international visitors to experience when they have the opportunity to visit Korea.
Minister Oh said that this year, the national consumer festival called “September Donghaeng Festival” expanded overseas for the first time and opened in Hanoi at the end of August. Excellent products from Korean small and medium-sized enterprises were selected for introduction and are expected to be well received in overseas markets, not only in Asia but also throughout the world .
Korea is making efforts to export “Made in Korea” products to foreign countries, including the Vietnamese market. Minister Oh expressed his hope that the start of cooperation efforts between Vietnam and Germany, important economic cooperation partners of Korea, will contribute to promoting economic development of all three countries in the future.
When asked about whether the Korean government has any policies to support more Vietnamese products to be imported into Korea, Minister Oh Young Joo said that trade is a two-way activity, and having more Vietnamese products in the Korean market or having more Vietnamese traders doing business in traditional markets in Korea is good for both sides. Therefore, relevant Korean agencies are making great efforts to implement it.
The Korean government has also made efforts to cooperate on procedures so that Vietnamese livestock can enter this market.
Most recently, the two sides have completed procedures to import grapefruit from Vietnam.
However, the import of seafood, livestock, and vegetables must comply with strict food quarantine regulations, so policy cooperation is needed to help import more quality Vietnamese products into Korea.
