A 9x female engineer in Ha Tinh not only produces clean vegetables and fruits, but also develops her fields into an experience destination for tourists, spreading the dream of 'green living'.

During the hot summer days, agricultural production is harder than ever. On a nearly 2-hectare field in Lien Huong village, Thach Dai commune, Thach Ha district (Ha Tinh), female engineer Tran Thi Hang (31 years old) exposes herself to the 37-38 degree Celsius sun to harvest vegetables, tubers, and fruits to sell to customers.

Although she is a beautiful, fair-skinned girl, after many years of "selling her face to the ground and her back to the sky", Hang's skin has become tanned and her hands have gradually become calloused. However, the 9x girl always feels happy because she has fulfilled her dream of "living green" and doing good things for life.

Hang graduated from Hue University of Agriculture and Forestry, majoring in Plant Protection Engineering (Faculty of Agronomy) in 2015. After leaving the university, the young girl went to work for some clean vegetable farms in Da Nang and Quang Nam to gain experience. In 2017, she returned to Hue to work as an agricultural engineer for a farm. The job brought a fairly stable income. However, just one year later, Hang decided to leave Hue to return to her hometown of Ha Tinh to fulfill her dream of owning a green farm, growing many types of clean vegetables and fruits to ensure the health of consumers.

“My decision to return to my hometown to start a business surprised my relatives. Some supported me, some did not, because everyone thought I was a girl and farming alone would be very hard,” Hang shared.

In 2019, Hang realized her ambition when she and a friend rented and reclaimed a piece of land of more than 1 hectare in Dong Xuan village, Thach Xuan commune, Thach Ha district. There, the two grew vegetables, raised chickens, and raised fish. In 2021, when they saw that the land in Lien Huong village, Thach Dai commune, Thach Ha district was nearly 2 hectares wide but was being left abandoned and wasted, Hang proposed the idea to the local authorities and rented it back to make a farm.

“After being approved, I personally reclaimed the land, weeded, and planted seasonal vegetables and fruits such as kohlrabi, carrots, cabbage; beans, squash, pumpkin; watermelon, cantaloupe, cucumber; herbs... All products are produced organically, without spraying pesticides, and only using microbial fertilizers to protect the environment,” Hang said.

In addition to growing clean vegetables, Hang also made swings, a check-in area for young people, a BBQ spot (outdoor grill), and a space to enjoy coffee and fruit juice in the middle of nature. She named her farm "Muse's Garden".

The female engineer shared that on her journey, not everything she experienced was smooth. On the first day of starting her business, she borrowed nearly 300 million VND from nothing to complete the infrastructure. During the process of growing vegetables and fruits outdoors, because she did not spray pesticides, when pests and insects damaged her, she had to start over...

What is more difficult is that during the rainy season, the land where the farm is built is often flooded. To overcome this, Hang determined that all products must be harvested before October every year, when the flood season comes so that the entire production area is submerged, taking advantage of the alluvium after the flood to increase soil fertility. During that time, she takes advantage of planting seeds in high ground, waiting for the flood to end, then renovating and planting a new crop.

After more than 3 years of effort, the farm has brought Hang a stable income. The engineer did not disclose the specific figure but said that it was a great consolation to encourage her to develop the farm step by step. Specifically, in the future, Hang wants to grow crops on a large scale in greenhouses and turn this place into a useful tourist attraction and experience for everyone.

Looking at the lush green “Muse Garden”, many people admire the young girl’s determination. Although she is on the way to building an agricultural brand, Hang has created an interesting personal brand, spreading enthusiasm, love of nature, daring to think and daring to do among young people.

From the idea of combining agricultural production with tourism, up to now, Hang's model has welcomed thousands of tourists to visit and harvest in the garden. The main subjects are young people, families of workers, civil servants and children.

According to Hang, every weekend, on holidays, families in Ha Tinh City bring their children to experience the life of farmers and immerse themselves in nature. This is a very useful and practical recreational activity, helping visitors relax and regain their spirit for a new work week.

The leaders of Thach Dai Commune People's Committee assessed that the clean agricultural production model combined with experiential tourism of engineer Tran Thi Hang has "revived" the difficult-to-cultivate, fallow land plots of households into green, safe-for-human-health vegetable, fruit, and flower beds. The local government will continue to accompany and support Hang in borrowing capital to complete future development projects.

With clean agricultural products to promote, since 2023, Hang and her colleagues have organized a “Carrying Market” to promote and introduce clean agricultural products. It is expected that from 2024, this market will be maintained once a month.
