FIFA futsal referee Truong Quoc Dung participates in refereeing at VPL-S4
The VPL-S4 season is taking place on football fields across the country, with increasing professional quality and tension and excitement. This brings with it pressure on referees as each decision can affect the outcome of a match and cause controversy, leading to many other consequences.
Recently, in the match between WTeam and Bamboo in round 5 of the 7-a-side national football championship - Southern region (SPL-S5), referee Tran Dinh Thinh became the center of attention. Referee Thinh decided to give a yellow card for the foul, sliding tackle from behind by player Mai Thanh Danh Toai (Bamboo) in a situation near the middle of the field, in order to prevent player Tran Tan Dong (Wteam) from counter-attacking, facing the goal in front with only the goalkeeper left.
This is just one of the situations that was analyzed in this match with many echoes. Previously, in the situation leading to WTeam's opening goal, both referees in charge of the match did not detect the mistake of the WTeam player when he committed a foul and swung his arm at the Bamboo defender's face. And after the decision to give a yellow card caused controversy, WTeam captain Huynh Ba Phuong, after committing a foul and receiving a yellow card, used his hand to push the referee, leading to receiving a second yellow card and leaving the field, causing the home team to lose to Bamboo 1-2.
After the match, referee Thinh and the person in charge of assigning referees received strong reactions. They even received insulting words.
Faced with the controversy, FIFA referee Truong Quoc Dung - member of the VFF Executive Committee and in charge of refereeing in the Southern region of VPL-S4 decided to speak up to share and explain, helping to broaden public opinion.
Referee Tran Dinh Thinh gave a yellow card to Bamboo player
First, Mr. Dung admitted the shortcomings of the Organizing Committee, the executive department, and the referee management department in applying the new law revision to 7-a-side football, which has not been standardized for a long time and depending on the conditions and circumstances, the referees will apply the futsal or 11-a-side rules. It is regrettable that this change has only been disseminated to the referees but has not been widely announced and disseminated to the teams, even in terms of the spirit of the law.
However, Mr. Dung said that if we consider the law, referee Tran Dinh Thinh was not wrong and explained: "The Vietnam Football Federation had a professional meeting, including the content of the 7-a-side law revision, with members including Head of the VFF Referee Board Dang Thanh Ha, FIFA referee Hoang Ngoc Ha, VFF Referee Management Department and expert Doan Phu Tan...
There is one thing that everyone agrees on: 7-a-side football is different from 11-a-side and 5-a-side football, so fouls that prevent an attack on goal should be considered a red card.
The reason is that on an 11-goal pitch, when facing the goalkeeper, the possibility of scoring a goal is high, a red card is a given, but on a 7-goal pitch with small goals, the chance of scoring is not clear, so the Dogso part (preventing a goal or a clear scoring opportunity) of Futsal is applied to a 7-goal pitch.
The mistake here is that since the play-off round, the referees have applied it thoroughly, but the Organizing Committee has not yet disseminated, instructed and clearly explained to the teams and players about the change in the definition of a foul and the use of cards by the referees.
Referee Truong Quoc Dung, once brought honor to Vietnam when he was assigned by FIFA to officiate at the 2016 Futsal World Cup in Colombia. He is also currently a member of the VFF Referee Committee and is on the AFC Elite Referee Group.
Returning to Danh Toai's foul, Mr. Dung assessed: "First, when putting yourself in the referee's position, there are 2 things to analyze. First, if Dogso (preventing a goal or clear scoring opportunity) in futsal law, it must ensure 5 factors: Direction of attack, ability to control the ball and gain control of the ball, position and number of defending team including goalkeeper, distance between the foul position and the goal, whether the goal is protected by the goalkeeper or not.
In these 5 factors, if one of them is missing, it will be a yellow card. Here, if the goalkeeper is still in the penalty area, he will only get a yellow card. If the goalkeeper leaves the penalty area, it will be a red card.
Second, if the referee considers the level of foul with 3 levels: excessive force, recklessness or just carelessness. This is the situation where the player tackles from behind, does not play the ball and also blocks, preventing the attacking player from playing the ball anymore. But regarding the level of foul, the referee judges it to be reckless. If the player grabs, pulls, or pushes, he will only receive a yellow card.
Actually, playing 7-a-side football for many years, the pressure of the match is terrible and just one mistake is enough for the teams to accuse the referee of being negative.
Wteam players celebrate scoring against Bamboo
In response to the question: " So why do you think the teams reacted so strongly?", Mr. Dung answered: " There was a play-off match this season, in a situation where the referee only grabbed the scissors, he gave a red card because the field was set to 11 players. At the time of that play-off match, I was not present on the field, but after the match, the referees met and reached an agreement. The referee's consensus in handling the situation is very important, that is a profound lesson for the referees in this year's season.
At the same time, the Organizing Committee also accepted the fault for only informing the referees in a unified manner, without having time to disseminate and explain to the team leaders and participating clubs to understand clearly.
What will come will come. Having chosen this job, one must accept and face the bad things and negativity from public opinion.
Mr. Dung continued: " I always tell my brothers about the importance of work and responsibility for the profession, this is a common playground, not for any individual. Behind us is the collective, the people who always trust us if things go wrong, we are the ones who fail. Material loss is not important but it affects the whole movement, affects the football teams.
Wteam Club's management and coaching board react to referee Tran Dinh Thinh's decision
Here, I would like to send a message to the clubs that if there is a plan to help referees work better, please propose to the Organizing Committee. I am ready to withdraw, because this is not a personal matter but for the system, for the common good and that is my responsibility. But if you are a referee, you will make mistakes, but if you react and make accusations when you make mistakes, it is a sin for the referees. Someone asked me what if the referee regime is improved?
I said that if you raise it, you don't know how much is enough because if it's enough, it's enough. We do this for honor and passion, and most importantly, we trust and respect each other. There are offers of hundreds of millions of dong from clubs that mean nothing, do you think about it, bosses?
The VFF Referee Board asked us about this. I also shared frankly and analyzed from the referee's perspective why such a decision was made."
