The victim's last image was captured by a passerby using a phone.
When he saw the ducks on the road, Mr. Rivara, 41, left his vehicle to help. The AP on May 23 quoted witnesses at the time as saying that Mr. Rivara made sure all traffic stopped before taking the family of ducks to the other side of the road at about 8:15 p.m. on May 18 in the city of Rocklin, northeast of Sacramento.
"All the ducks crossed the road," said 11-year-old Jude Peterson, who was there. "He did a great job," Peterson said.
Mr. Rivara then walked back to his car when a vehicle crossed the intersection and hit him. The impact was so strong that he was thrown into the air before falling to the ground. He died at the scene, at the age of 41.
The family has set up a GoFundMe page to help support his wife and two young children. By the evening of May 23, nearly $90,000 had been raised.
The driver of the car that hit and killed Mr. Rivara was a 17-year-old girl who cooperated fully with the police. After questioning witnesses and reviewing video footage, the police said the driver did not break any laws in this case.
