Red carded in the Asian tournament, if coach Kim calls him up to U.23, when will Manh Hung play again?

Vietnam U.23 stopped in the quarter-finals of the 2024 AFC U.23 Championship after a 0-1 defeat to Iraq U.23. In this match, center-back Nguyen Manh Hung was sent off by referee Ko Hyung-jin in the 90+1 minute, when he kicked the knee of an Iraq U.23 player.

That was also one of two red cards that U.23 Vietnam received in the 2024 AFC U.23 Championship finals. Previously, center-back Nguyen Ngoc Thang was also sent off in the match against U.23 Kuwait in the opening match.

With the direct red card received for rough/unsportsmanlike conduct, according to the regulations of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), Manh Hung will be suspended for 2 matches.

Manh Hung was given a red card by referee Ko Hyung-jin in the match against U.23 Iraq.

However, because U.23 Vietnam stopped at the 2024 U.23 Asian Cup right after Manh Hung received a red card, the suspension of the 2005-born midfielder will be transferred to the 2026 U.23 Asian Cup qualifiers. Thus, Manh Hung will not be able to play in 2 of the first 3 qualifying matches.

This is similar to the case of goalkeeper Quan Van Chuan in the 2024 U.23 Asian qualifiers. Due to receiving a red card in the final match of U.23 Vietnam in the 2022 U.23 Asian tournament (in a 0-2 defeat to U.23 Saudi Arabia), Van Chuan's suspension was accumulated to the 2024 U.23 Asian qualifiers.

Knowing that his player was serving a two-match suspension, coach Philippe Troussier did not register him for the qualifying campaign. Van Chuan later cleared his suspension and reappeared in the final round as captain.

At the age of 19, Manh Hung is eligible to participate in the 2026 U.23 Asian Cup, or even the 2028 U.23 Asian Cup. Because his student was suspended for 2 qualifying matches, after 1 year when U.23 Vietnam competes in the qualifying round, the current head coach of the team (most likely Mr. Kim Sang-sik) will most likely not register Manh Hung, let this player serve 2 suspension matches, then he will be eligible to participate in the final round if U.23 Vietnam wins the ticket and Manh Hung himself is selected.

After the 2024 AFC U-23 Championship, the Vietnamese U-23 players returned to the battle for a place in their clubs. According to coach Hoang Anh Tuan, there are very few young players today who can gain a foothold in a V-League team, which is the sad reality of Vietnamese football.
