The case of Mr. Dao Van De, 103 years old in Hung Yen , has caused many surprises to the doctors at Bach Mai Hospital. He was easy-going all his life, never scolded his wife and children, lived to be 103 years old and was still very clear-headed, read poetry, read newspapers every day and just miraculously overcame a stroke.

Doctor Dao Viet Phuong - Deputy Director of the Stroke Center, Bach Mai Hospital - said that more than a week ago, 103-year-old Dao Van De was admitted to Bach Mai Hospital after the first leg of the Vietnam - Thailand final match had just ended.

According to Mr. De's son, he watched the whole match, when the score was 2-1 in favor of Vietnam, he excitedly shouted loudly and then gradually fainted, then showed signs of "going limp like a melon", his son saw that he seemed to have a stroke so 10 minutes later he called an ambulance, 90 minutes later he was at Bach Mai Hospital.

After being rescued, he still remembers every goal that the Vietnamese players scored against Thailand.

Lessons on life and love

Doctor Phuong shared that this was a difficult case, when he was admitted to the hospital, Mr. De's mouth was crooked and he was paralyzed on one side. Due to the severity of the illness in an elderly person, the doctors quickly consulted and decided to use two types of medicine at the same time. This is a routine indication at the hospital, but this is the first time they have used it on an elderly person like Mr. De.

Fortunately, his family actively cooperated, so after taking medicine and receiving intensive treatment, Mr. De gradually regained consciousness, and now he has fully recovered both in terms of movement and memory. He even remembers the poem he wrote to read to the doctors. At the age of 103, the old man speaks fluently, only slightly hard of hearing, making everyone admire him.

Accompanying him to the hospital were his 81-year-old eldest son, his 75-year-old fourth daughter, and his 77-year-old second son. His eldest grandson is 61 years old and has a grandson, that is, his great-grandson (some places call him his great-grandson), and his great-grandson also has children. Northerners call the children of great-grandchildren "chít", so far he has 23 great-grandchildren (23 great-grandchildren) and 6 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Dao Thi Nhat, the fourth daughter of the old man, said that the old man still eats normally, he eats three meals a day but the dishes are simple, he eats a lot of vegetables, for lunch he eats rice with two vegetable dishes, often sesame, peanuts, he rarely eats meat, in the evening he eats porridge or rice. Since his retirement (in 1981) until now, he has not smoked, has a regular lifestyle, he goes to bed at 8:30 pm every day.

Another special thing is the love of the family for him and of him for the family.

According to Mr. Dao Tuan Nha - the eldest son of the old man, all his life, Mr. De was easy-going, cheerful, never scolded his wife and children, and never argued with anyone. His wife also lived a long life, passing away in 2019 at the age of 96. The whole family is still together, in which he lives with the family of his fourth daughter.

"I think what I need to learn from this family is love and lifestyle," said a witness to the old man's story.

The family's knowledge is very good, coming later will be difficult.

According to Mr. Dao Xuan Co - Director of Bach Mai Hospital, witnessing Mr. De's quick recovery journey, in addition to the efforts of the doctors, the family also recognized early signs of stroke, bringing him in early during the "golden hour" within six hours of the onset of symptoms.

"He was taken to the hospital early and received emergency care within 4 hours and 30 minutes from the time he showed signs of illness. That is an important time for the hospital to perform emergency stroke care, and the family's knowledge is very good. We are supporting localities to bring emergency stroke care to provinces and cities, thereby helping more patients get to the hospital sooner and be saved," said Mr. Co.

With this special case, Mr. Co said that Bach Mai Hospital would take care of his health from now on, and every 3 months would come to his place for regular check-ups or invite him to the hospital. After his son told him about the hospital's intention, Mr. De happily accepted.
