The bride’s family claims to have met all the demands of the groom and his family. After being left hanging on the wedding day, the bride’s family is demanding that the groom and his family repay all the costs of preparing for the wedding.
Recently, a wedding in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, India turned into a dispute after the groom did not attend the wedding as scheduled.
Although the groom Sohan Lal Yadav (from Ayodhya) finally turned up after police intervention, the bride's family refused to proceed with the wedding and took the groom hostage, demanding that they refund the entire wedding expenses.
Lal Bahadur, the bride's father, said he had met the groom's family's demands, including motorbikes and cash, to ensure the wedding went smoothly.

The groom said the wedding procession was delayed.
"The wedding was fixed 10 months ago. We did the tilak (a pre-wedding ritual in India) and there was no problem. Three days after the tilak, the groom refused to go ahead with the wedding. When asked why, he said he wanted a car. We agreed. Then he said he didn't want the car, he wanted cash. We agreed too. We asked him if there was any other problem, he said no. So we continued with the wedding preparations," the bride's father told India Today .
Lal Bahadur said that the wedding was scheduled for December 2 and all preparations were going smoothly.
But on the night of the wedding, even as the guests began to leave, the groom was still missing. "We kept calling but couldn't get through," said the bride's father. "My brother-in-law lives in the same area as the groom. He told me to go to the police station. When we got there, we found the groom."
After police intervention, the groom finally agreed to proceed with the wedding and arrived at the bride's house with the wedding procession at around 2:30 a.m.
When the groom's family arrived late, the bride's relatives demanded a refund of the wedding expenses. Tensions rose as the groom and his family were held at the bride's house until the issue was resolved.
"We just want him and his family to pay back the wedding expenses, then they can go home," the bride's family said.
The bride’s family also alleged that the groom had run away three days before the wedding and was in a relationship with another woman. In addition, the groom agreed to the marriage only because the police had warned him that he could face a dowry case.
However, groom Sohan Lal explained: "We were delayed in taking the wedding procession. When we reached, the bride's family refused the marriage and asked us to pay the wedding expenses. They did not let us leave."
Local police have launched an investigation. A police officer said: "We have received a complaint and are investigating. The groom was reported missing earlier and we are looking into the details."
