After being bitten by a dog, Ms. Tracy Ridout suffered a serious infection and later died.

Unfortunately, she was bitten by the dog and it was just a small bite. The woman didn't think anything of it because it was just a minor wound and only a temporary bandage was applied.

"She was playing with the dog and it accidentally bit her finger because it mistook it for a toy," said Sophie Ridout, Tracy's daughter.

But a few days later, strange symptoms began to appear. Although the bite was small, it caused Mrs. Tracy to feel pain and discomfort. She used Nurofen and Panadol to control her condition but to no avail.

About a week after the dog bite, she drove to Rockingham General Hospital in Perth for a check-up. Doctors ordered her to be admitted as her condition rapidly deteriorated. She was diagnosed with a wound infection, which progressed to a serious infection in her blood that had spread to her kidneys and liver.

On August 18, Tracy was diagnosed with Capnocytophaga canimorsus, an extremely rare bacterial infection that is usually transmitted through animal bites or licking of open wounds.

Just one week later, on August 25, Tracy fell into a coma and the doctor said there was nothing more that could be done. "All of my mother's internal organs had almost stopped working," Sophie recounted.

Tracy died a few days later. Sophie and her brother Kieren set up a GoFundMe account to raise money for Tracy’s hospital and funeral expenses. Sophie has since spoken out to warn people about the dangers of dog bites and not to ignore signs of infection.

"Even if the bite is small and similar to a scratch like my mother's case, you should not be subjective," Sophie shared.

She also said the doctor told the family that if Mrs. Tracy had been taken to the hospital earlier, the infection would not have progressed so badly and could have been completely cured, according to The Sun.
