Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên31/01/2024

On January 31, specialist doctor Ngo Hung Tri, Head of the Department of Diagnostic Imaging, Endoscopy Unit, Xuyen A Tay Ninh General Hospital, said that at the Emergency Department, as soon as the child was admitted, the doctors quickly ordered an abdominal X-ray, the results of which revealed that the coin was in the stomach.

After an urgent consultation, the doctors agreed to prescribe an interventional endoscopy. The endoscopy team removed the coin from the patient's stomach. The patient's health was stable and he was discharged from the hospital shortly thereafter.

Doctor Tri said that this child was discovered by his family and taken to the emergency room in time. If not, the foreign object remaining in the digestive tract would cause more serious complications such as intestinal perforation, intestinal obstruction, etc.

Beware of accidents in children during Tet

Doctor Tri noted that children aged 1-5 years old, like to explore, so they can swallow any foreign object into their body. Especially during the Lunar New Year, families often prepare many types of cakes, fruits, jelly, pumpkin seeds, melon seeds, jams, ... decorative toys with many colors that children love. Therefore, parents should pay attention to supervise, choose suitable food and toys, avoid letting children play with small, compact objects within reach; for toys and items with batteries, the battery position should be firmly fixed.

If a foreign object is discovered in a child's body, the first thing parents need to do is stay calm, find a way to reassure the child, and quickly take the child to a medical facility with an endoscopy unit to promptly remove the foreign object.

Specialist Doctor 2 Nguyen Minh Tien, Deputy Director of the City Children's Hospital, said that during the time before Tet, many children are allowed to stay home from school to celebrate Tet. However, parents are often busy so supervision may not be careful, leading to daily accidents such as foreign bodies in the airways, drowning, accidental ingestion of chemicals, electric shock, and burns.

How to handle when children choke on foreign objects

Specialist Doctor 1 Doan Thi Thanh Hong, Department of Respiratory Medicine 1, Children's Hospital 1, shared that when a child chokes on a foreign object, parents need to stay calm and perform the following procedures based on the following age groups:

Back pats, chest thrusts (for children under 2 years old):

Place the baby face down on the left arm, holding the head and neck firmly with the left hand. Use the left index and middle fingers to push the baby's chin up to arch the neck to avoid collapsing the airway.

Then use the heel of your right hand to pat the child's back 5 times (between the shoulder blades).

If the child is still having difficulty breathing or turning purple, turn the child onto his right side and use two fingers of the left hand to press firmly on the area of half of the sternum 5 times. Continue alternating back blows and chest thrusts until the foreign object falls out of the airway or the child cries.

Heimlich maneuver (for children over 2 years old):

Sit or stand behind the child so that it is convenient to put both arms around the child. Make a fist with the left hand, place it right above the stomach, below the sternum in front of the chest, and the right hand holds the fist. Press firmly from front to back and from bottom to top until the foreign object comes out.

After performing these steps, parents should still take their child to the hospital for a doctor's examination even if the child has vomited a foreign object.
