Earlier, Ms. Bella Montoya, 76 years old, was confirmed by a local hospital to have died of a stroke.
Gilberto Barbera, the victim's son, said that during the funeral, some relatives noticed that the coffin seemed to be making continuous noises, according to the Insider news site.
A woman shocked her loved ones by banging on her coffin at her funeral last week.
"My mother was wrapped in blankets and placed in a coffin. When we went closer and checked inside, I could see she was breathing but very heavily," Barbera recounted, adding that this initially frightened the family.
Last week, a video posted by the AP news agency also showed relatives caring for Ms. Montoya when they discovered her alive in the coffin and struggling to breathe.
The family quickly took the victim to the emergency room. Despite spending a week in intensive care at the hospital, Ms. Montoya ultimately passed away.
After his death, the victim was also taken back to the funeral home where the visitation took place last week and was later buried in a public cemetery.
Ecuador's Ministry of Health said it would conduct an investigation at the hospital where Ms. Montoya was reported to have died of a stroke to find out if there were any problems with the death certificate issuance process there.
The hospital has not yet given a detailed explanation about this incident.
