Dengue fever vaccination begins in Vietnam

On September 20, dengue fever vaccines were officially administered to Vietnamese children. The vaccine was researched and developed by the Japanese pharmaceutical company Takeda.

According to Mr. Tran Dac Phu, former Director of the Department of Preventive Medicine, Vietnam is currently circulating all 4 types of Dengue virus that cause dengue fever, in which the main circulating virus types are DEN-1 and DEN-2.

DEN-2 is commonly associated with severe dengue cases and epidemics, and is the major cause of dengue-related deaths.

Every year, the number of cases and deaths due to dengue fever remains high and is spreading more and more widely because mosquitoes have the characteristic of breeding in water such as waste, bottles when there is rainwater, jars, water tanks, even in incense burners... and hovering, landing on objects, making it very difficult to spray pesticides to eliminate and completely solve the problem even though it has been done for many years.

Takeda Japan's dengue vaccine is effective in preventing all four types of dengue virus that cause the disease (DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3, DEN-4), with an effectiveness of up to 80% and prevents the risk of hospitalization by up to 90%.

In particular, the vaccine is effective in preventing reinfection for people who have had dengue fever. This is very meaningful for Vietnam because the number of people who have had dengue fever at least once is quite high, and the subsequent illness is often more severe than the previous one. Timely vaccination helps protect the patient's health and life.

Dengue fever vaccine is given in 2 doses 3 months apart and can be given at the same time as other vaccines depending on the type. Women should complete the vaccination schedule preferably 3 months before and at least 1 month before pregnancy.

MSc. Le Hong Nga, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Center for Disease Control (HCDC), said that in recent years, the dengue fever epidemic has changed, no longer developing in cycles but increasing steadily every year, especially at the end of the year. Therefore, Ms. Nga assessed that the introduction of the vaccine will help reduce the number of cases significantly.

Dr. Nga also noted that people still need to maintain other epidemic prevention measures such as preventing mosquitoes by cleaning the living environment, sleeping under mosquito nets, etc. in addition to vaccination to control the epidemic effectively and sustainably.

As a unit that receives many children with dengue fever in the southern region, Dr. Nguyen Minh Tuan, Head of the Dengue Fever Department, Children's Hospital 1 (HCMC) said that many children with dengue fever are hospitalized when they have severe complications, falling into a state of shock, cardiovascular collapse, massive bleeding, reduced circulatory volume with a very high risk of death.

In recent years, the number of severe dengue fever cases has shown signs of increasing, possibly related to the predominant DEN-2 virus type causing the disease, an increase in overweight and obese patients, and underlying diseases...

Therefore, the introduction of dengue fever vaccine in Vietnam will help reduce the burden of disease on people, reduce the number of hospitalizations and complications, avoid overload, and help hospitals focus resources on treating non-communicable diseases.

Regarding the vaccination facility, Dr. Bach Thi Chinh, Medical Director of the VNVC Vaccination System, said that the dengue fever vaccine of Takeda, Japan, was approved by the Ministry of Health in May 2024, for children from 4 years old and adults.

The VNVC vaccination system, together with the manufacturer, has made efforts to bring it to Vietnam as soon as possible because this is one of the most anticipated vaccines as every year in Vietnam there are large and small outbreaks, causing hundreds of thousands of cases and dozens of deaths in many localities.

In particular, the disease is becoming more and more epidemiologically complex, no longer cyclical, controlling mosquitoes that transmit the disease is difficult and treating dengue fever is very complicated and expensive, but the mortality rate remains high if not detected accurately and treated promptly.
