On the afternoon of June 17, the leaders of the Quynh Nhai District Police announced that they had issued a decision to initiate a criminal case, indict the suspects, and detain them for a period of two months. The suspects are Lo Van Tuan (30 years old) and Quang Van Dung (27 years old), both residing in Ta Ma commune (Tuan Giao district, Dien Bien province), for the crime of "destroying forests," as stipulated in Article 243 of the Penal Code.
The police in Quynh Nhai district read out the order to arrest and detain suspects Lo Van Tuan and Quang Van Dung.
Previously, on May 4th, the Quynh Nhai District Police received a report from the Thuan Chau Special-Use and Protection Forest Management Board (Pa Ma Pha Khinh commune, Quynh Nhai district) that in sub-area 23, plot 11, lot 3, coordinates X:454463 and Y:2407115, many trees had been cut down and approximately 1.6 hectares of forest had been burned.
During the investigation, the Quỳnh Nhai District Police determined that Tuan and Dung were the two people responsible for the arson, deforestation, and tree felling mentioned above, and summoned them for questioning.
Initially, both admitted to their crimes, confessing to clearing the forest to create farmland.
The police in Quynh Nhai District have applied procedural measures against Tuan and Dung to investigate and handle the case according to regulations.
