Maintain stability in the 10th grade entrance exam
Immediately after the Ministry of Education and Training announced Circular No. 30/2024/TT-BGDDT on regulations for junior high school and high school admissions, applicable from 2025, Ho Chi Minh City was the first locality to finalize the entrance exam method for grade 10 in the 2025-2026 school year with 3 subjects, including: Math, Literature and Foreign Language.
After Ho Chi Minh City, Hai Duong is the second locality to announce the third subject, English, for the 10th grade entrance exam for the 2025-2026 school year. In recent years, Hai Duong has reduced the number of subjects for the 10th grade entrance exam from 4 to 3, including: Math, Literature, English. Therefore, the upcoming 10th grade exam will basically keep the same number of subjects as previous years.
Recently, the Department of Education and Training of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province and the Department of Education and Training of Can Tho and Nghe An cities also informed that the third exam for admission to grade 10 of high school includes 3 subjects: Literature, Math and English.
Some localities such as Quang Nam, Khanh Hoa, Tien Giang, Dong Nai plan to choose English as the third subject in the 10th grade entrance exam.
According to localities, this is to help motivate and encourage students to increase their study of this subject in the context of international integration and make English the second language at school.
Reduce unnecessary pressure
Meanwhile, in Hanoi, in recent days, information has been circulating on social media that the Hanoi Department of Education and Training has finalized the third subject in the 10th grade entrance exam for the 2025-2026 school year as the Natural Science group. The above information has received much attention from the public.
However, in response to the information reported on social media, the leader of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training confirmed that this information is inaccurate. At this time, the Department of Education and Training has not announced the third subject of the 10th grade entrance exam for public high schools in the 2025-2026 school year. This makes students, parents, and students in Hanoi even more anxious and worried.
Nguyen Phuong Chi, a 9th grade student at Thanh Tri Secondary School (Hoang Mai District) said that although she had prepared herself mentally and made efforts to study, she was very worried because it was very difficult to get into a 10th grade public school in Hanoi, with the enrollment quota each year accounting for only over 60% of the total number of 9th grade students.
Chi expressed her wish: "The Hanoi Department of Education and Training will soon announce the third exam subject before Tet because the Tet holiday is 9 days long. We will take advantage of this time to review and prepare mentally for the exam."
According to the high school admission regulations issued by the Ministry of Education and Training with No. 30/2024/TT-BGDDT, the third subject (test) is selected by the Department of Education and Training from subjects assessed by scores in the general education program at the secondary school level, announced no later than March 31 every year.
As a parent whose child is studying in grade 9 at Le Quy Don Secondary School (Dong Da District, Hanoi), Ms. Nguyen Thu Huong expressed her concern about this regulation. In fact, in recent years, in Hanoi, every year students and their families are impatient, fidgeting like "sitting on fire" waiting until the end of March to know the third exam subject.
“I hope that the locality will consider pushing up the announcement of the third subject to reduce pressure on students. The third subject should be announced at the beginning of the school year so that students and teachers can proactively prepare. There is no need to prolong the suspense, anxiety, and stress of “guessing” which subject the third subject is,” Ms. Huong said.
According to information from the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, based on Circular No. 30/2024/TT-BGDDT, the Department is urgently developing a plan to enroll students in the first grades of the 2025-2026 school year, including grade 10, to submit to the City People's Committee for approval. Hanoi's grade 10 enrollment method ensures compliance with regulations, is suitable for the actual situation, does not cause stress for students, and ensures the quality of teaching and learning.
Director of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training Tran The Cuong noted that based on the structure and format of the 10th grade exam for the 2025-2026 school year issued by the Department, schools should build a bank of test and assessment questions according to the requirements of the subject and organize thorough practice for students. Particularly for the Literature subject, schools should avoid using texts and excerpts from textbooks as test and assessment materials to overcome the phenomenon of students memorizing mechanically.
