Waiting from Dong Duong
Within the 5.3-hectare protected area of the special national relic Dong Duong Buddhist Monastery in Binh Dinh Bac (Thang Binh), there are still 11 houses, 112 graves, and many areas of cropland, forest land, and annual crops.
Every year, Thang Binh district spends 20 million VND to clear the area around the gate of Thap Sang and the road to the relic. For Thap Sang relic alone, the provincial People's Committee has provided funds to build metal supports to replace the wooden supports damaged by natural disasters from 2013 to present.
Efforts to protect the relic have stopped there, on the ground, for 13 years. The Gate of the Bright Tower is seriously deteriorating, bricks and mortar are falling off, and there is a risk of collapse if there is no timely protection solution.
Mr. Vo Van Hung - Chairman of the People's Committee of Thang Binh district said that the People's Committee of the district has coordinated with the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Provincial Monuments and Landscapes Management Board to create conditions for a delegation of experts from the Archaeological Institute of India (ASI) to survey and conduct an initial assessment of the current situation and orientation for the conservation and restoration of Dong Duong Buddhist Institute.
“Thang Binh proposed that the province pay attention to having specific mechanisms, plans, and directions to survey, embellish, and restore the special national relic of Dong Duong Buddhist Institute to promote the value of the relic.
In the immediate future, it is recommended that provincial departments and branches provide guidance and support in measuring, compensating, and clearing the core area of the relic (about 5.2 hectares in size) and issuing a Land Use Rights Certificate for the relic.
Although the Provincial People's Committee has agreed on the policy of financial support, due to the provisions of the Law, the site clearance project cannot be an independent project, so it cannot be implemented according to the policy," said Mr. Hung.
Urgent protection of relics
A representative of the Monuments and Landscapes Management Board said that for the national monument of Chien Dan tower, the unit is actively building a dossier to advise the Provincial People's Committee to propose the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to carry out restoration. As for the current exhibition house, it is quite cramped, and the protective fence at the exhibition house has rusted in many places.
Lack of attraction and failure to connect destinations in the region, the scene of few visitors at some national relics is also a common situation. Mr. Nguyen Minh Nam - Vice Chairman of Tam Ky City People's Committee said that Ky Anh tunnel relic is one of the three largest tunnels in the country, with a length of 32km. Ky Anh tunnel was recognized as a national historical relic in 1997, and has been a provincial tourist destination since October 2023.

In the period of 2017 - 2021, Tam Ky has built many items such as reception house, toilet area, exhibition house, tunnel entrance landscape, Tan tunnel door canopy, drainage tunnel, straw tunnel, parking lot, trees in the memorial stele area near the reception house of Ky Anh tunnel relic site, Dam river boat dock in the area in front of Vinh Binh communal house. At the same time, investing in and renovating Thach Tan communal house.
Some projects have completed investment procedures but have not been implemented, such as the urgent renovation and embellishment of martyr Pham Sy Thuyet's house, the tunnel from martyr Pham Sy Thuyet's house to Dam river wharf, Ong Ky well, the tunnel in the stadium area of Thach Tan village... Tam Ky also plans to embellish the area of trees, renovate the lotus pond, create landscapes, invest in a reception house and build 3 new concrete roads to connect traffic.
In 2024, Tam Ky City plans to invest in tourism infrastructure, promoting the Ky Anh tunnel relic associated with Bai Say - Dam River. "The city will select tunnel sections for restoration, making Ky Anh square space into a tourist destination, connecting with Dam River. It is expected to organize community tourism development associated with about 25 households making sedge mats" - Mr. Nguyen Minh Nam - Vice Chairman of Tam Ky City People's Committee informed.
Calculating urgent solutions to effectively protect national relics is what Provincial Party Secretary Luong Nguyen Minh Triet requested, after visiting localities.
Specifically, for Dong Duong Buddhist Monastery, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism proactively researched and coordinated with local authorities to advise on resolving issues related to land records and procedures at Dong Duong Buddhist Monastery relic.
At the Chien Dan tower relic, it is necessary to consider promoting the digitization of the relic, promoting it to attract visitors, creating appeal for this national relic as well as urgently submitting a proposal to restore the tower blocks.
Regarding Ky Anh tunnel, the Provincial Party Secretary said that there is still a lot of work to be done to create a tourist destination. He requested Tam Ky to pay attention to preserving and maintaining craft villages to serve community tourism around the relic, prepare conditions to be able to connect with Dam River, Tam Thanh beach, diversify destinations...
