Earlier this afternoon, August 2, Trinh Thu Vinh scored 587 points, ranked 4th in the qualifying round and won the final of the women's 25m pistol.
She scored 290 points after three series of 10 shots in the slow-fire section, ranking seventh out of 40 competitors. In the rapid-fire section, Thu Vinh scored 297/300 points. She had 15 minutes of consecutive 10-point shots, although this event is not really her forte.
Trinh Thu Vinh will compete in the second final at 2:30 p.m. on August 3.
Talking about the scoring format in the final, former national shooting athlete Pham Cao Son shared: "In the final, the athletes will shoot simultaneously, 5 shots per round. Regarding the scoring method, 8 athletes will shoot simultaneously in each round. After 4 rounds (20 shots), the athlete with the lowest score will be eliminated. The remaining 7 athletes will shoot the next round simultaneously and then eliminate the person with the lowest score. Like that, each round will eliminate 1 person until the 3 athletes winning the bronze, silver and gold medals are determined."
Coach Pham Cao Son also shared more details about how to calculate points in this event, unlike in the qualifying round where points are calculated and then added up for each shot; in the final, the athlete with more points wins. Hit here is not from 1 to 10 but shots from 10.1 and below are missed, meaning 0 points. From 10.2 and above are counted as 1 point. This means that a score of 1 and a score of 10.1 are equal, both equal to 0. Scores of 10.2 and 10.9 are also equal, both equal to 1. The athletes will have to concentrate fully on each shot, not being distracted for even a second. Maybe the previous series hit the bull's eye but the next series missed a little and was immediately eliminated because there were no points.

Sharing about the fierceness of the final of the 25m sport pistol event, Ms. Nguyen Thi Nhung, former head coach of the Vietnamese shooting team, also commented that the challenge for Thu Vinh will be very big: "According to the shooting rules, when entering the final, athletes only compete in rapid shooting, a series of 5 shots in 3 seconds, 7 to 7 seconds of holding the gun and 3 seconds of shooting. When shooting 10.2 points, it will be counted as 1 point (hit). In the qualifying round, Thu Vinh shot 30 shots and got 14 center shots (ie 10.2 or less). So we can see the difficulty of this event when entering the final. It is possible to shoot many 10 points without being counted."
The women's 25m pistol is not Thu Vinh's forte, but who knows, with a day of focused competition and a little luck, she could make history.
