Recently, Children's Hospital 2 (Ho Chi Minh City) admitted three siblings from the same family, residing in Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City, who were hospitalized due to progressively worsening lower limb weakness and respiratory failure, suspected to be caused by botulinum toxin poisoning. According to their family, the three children had previously eaten Vietnamese sausage of unknown origin that appeared spoiled. By the afternoon of the same day, the three children began experiencing dizziness, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.
Dr. Truong Thi Ngoc Phu, a specialist at Children's Hospital 2, noted that the symptoms of botulinum poisoning include early signs such as fatigue, vomiting, and diarrhea while the patient remains conscious and does not have a fever. As the toxin accumulates, it can cause blurred vision, dry mouth, and signs of muscle paralysis such as drooping eyelids, difficulty swallowing, and difficulty speaking. In more severe cases, it can lead to paralysis of the respiratory muscles, resulting in respiratory failure and potentially death if the patient does not receive timely intervention.
Do not use the product if you notice any unusual color or smell.
The BAT antitoxin should be administered as soon as possible after diagnosis of botulinum poisoning to help improve mortality rates. However, this drug is very rare, not always readily available, and expensive. Therefore, supportive care is the mainstay of treatment for botulinum poisoning, especially in cases of severe respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation, which can last from several weeks to several months for recovery.
Dr. Phu advises parents to pay special attention to hygiene in the preparation of fresh food and to avoid giving honey to children under 1 year old. For canned food, parents should choose products with clear origins, safe packaging, and clearly marked expiration dates.
When you notice food with unusual color or smell, you should report it to the seller, supplier, or relevant authorities. Absolutely do not consume any suspicious or substandard food to ensure your health and the safety of your family.
