The squatting posture combined with bending over accidentally creates three bending points, causing increased pressure in the abdomen and chest many times, leading to stroke, cerebral hemorrhage, myocardial infarction... - Photo: Provided by the doctor
Doctor Nguyen Minh Duc (Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine and Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital) said that stroke is a condition of narrowing of blood vessels in the brain, while myocardial infarction is a condition of narrowing of coronary arteries.
Therefore, we need to be careful to avoid prolonged bending movements. A very dangerous movement that we often do every day is squatting, plus bending when tying shoelaces.
"I have witnessed several cases of shock, even stroke, cerebral hemorrhage, myocardial infarction, and aortic rupture when performing this squatting and bending motion," shared Dr. Minh Duc.
Faced with the risk of harming health with squatting and bending movements, Dr. Minh Duc recommends that elderly people should not squat and bend or kneel and bend for 1-4 minutes; the younger the person is and the more flexible their health, the longer the sitting time can be.
Instead, prioritize sitting cross-legged, bending slightly, and sitting with your legs drawn towards you. When changing positions, lean back slightly to relieve pressure on the diaphragm and chest before standing up suddenly.
When moving from lying down to sitting, you should slowly lean to the right side, put your hands on it and then sit up. Don't do it too quickly, it's very dangerous.
For people aged 40 and over, they should have a heart attack screening with an echocardiogram and electrocardiogram. For stroke risk screening, they should have a brain MRI with imaging of the carotid arteries into the brain.
Carotid ultrasound only helps to see the extracranial carotid artery, the intracranial condition is almost impossible to assess and the cause of stroke is up to 80% due to stenosis of the carotid artery and intracranial cerebral artery.
In terms of prevention, we need to have a leisurely lifestyle, ideal weight, a reasonable diet, and a suitable schedule of both dynamic ( sports ) and static (meditation) exercise.
